1 PRAY'R is the soul's sincere desire, Utter'd or unexprest; vling The falling of a tear, When none but God is near. 3 Pray'r is the simplest form of speech That infant lips can try; Pray’r, the sublimest strains that reach The Majesty on high. 4 Pray'r is the Christian's vital breath, The Christian's native air, He enters heav'n with pray’r. Returning from his ways; And say, Behold he prays.' The HOLY SPIRIT pleads ; For sinners intercedes. Hymn. Prayer. 1 LORD, when we bend before Thy throne, And our confessions pour, And hate what we deplore. 2 Our broken spirit pitying see; True penitence impart ; Beam hope on ev'ry heart. May we our wills resign; That is not wholly Thine ! And raise it to the skies, That grants it, or denies. Hymn. Hinderances to Prayer. 1 WHAT various hind'rances we meet But wishes to be often there? 2 Pray’r makes the darken'd cloud withdraw, Pray’r climbs the ladder Jacob saw, 2 Restraining pray'r, we cease to fight; Pray'r makes the Christian's armour bright The weakest saint upon his knees. 4 While Moses stood with arms spread wide, Success was found on Israel's side; Hymn. Spirit of Prayer. The same through one eternal day, And O instruct us how to pray! And stir us up to seek Thy face ! We cannot feel a good desire, Till Thou who call'dst a world from nought, The pow'r into our hearts inspire; And then we in the Spirit groan, And then we give Thee back Thine own. 3 JESUS, regard the joint complaint Of all Thy tempted followers here ! And now supply the common want, And send us down the COMFORTER: The spirit of ceaseless pray’r impart, And fix Thy Agent in our heart. 4 To help our soul's infirmity, To heal Thy sin-sick people's care, And make our hearts a house of pray'r, And let us now Thyself receive. To us who for Thy coming stay: We ask the constant pow'r to pray : - Indulge us, LORD, in this request; Thou canst not then deny the rest. Wymn. Importunate and constant Prayer. 1 SHEPHERD divine, our wants relieve, On this our evil day: The pow'r to watch and pray. 2 Long as our fiery trials last, Long as the cross we bear, In never-ceasing pray’r! Give us in faith to claim ; And know Thy hidden Name. Till Thou Thyself bestow, Be this the cry of ev'ry heart, • I will not let Thee go.' 5 I will not let Thee go, unless Thou tell Thy Name to me; With all Thy great salvation bless, And make me all like Thee. Behold Thy open face, And pray'r in endless praise! Hymn. Resignation. All is well if CHRIST be mine I have only to resign. Forc'd me to the sinner's Friend, By the way, and to the end. 'Tis enough that I am nigh; I will all thy burdens bear, I will all thy wants supply. 4 Simply follow as I lead; Do not reason, but believe; Thou shalt surely help receive.' 5 LORD, I would, I do submit, Gladly yield my all to Thee; What Thy wisdom sees most fit, Must be, surely, best for me. |
