3 The Lord will come: a dreadful form,
With wreath of flame, and robe of storm,
On cherub wings, and wings of wind,
Anointed Judge of human-kind.

4 Can this be he who wont to stray

A pilgrim on the world's highway;

By power oppress'd, and mock'd by pride,
O God! is this the Crucified?

5 Go, tyrants, to the rocks complain;
Go, seek the mountain's cleft in vain;
But faith, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy, The Lord is come.

3

"They shall perish, but thou shalt endure.”

THAT day of wrath, that dreadful day,

When heaven and earth shall pass away,
What power shall be the sinner's stay?
How shall he meet that dreadful day?

2 When, shrivelling like a parchèd scroll,
The flaming heavens together roll,
When louder yet, and yet more dread,
Swells the high trump that wakes the dead.

3 O! on that day, that wrathful day,
When man to judgment wakes from clay,
Be thou, O Christ, the sinner's stay,
Though heaven and earth shall pass away.

4 "Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the [L. M. Lord; Hosanna in the highest."

HOSANNA to the living Lord!

Hosanna to the incarnate Word!

with Chorus.

To Christ, Creator, Saviour, King,
Let earth, let heaven, Hosanna sing.
Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

2 Hosanna, Lord! thine angels cry;
Hosanna, Lord! thy saints reply;
Above, beneath us, and around,
The dead and living swell the sound;

Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

3 O Saviour, with protecting care,
Return to this thy house of prayer:
Assembled in thy sacred name,
Where we thy parting promise claim:

Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

4 But, chiefest, in our cleansèd breast,
Eternal bid thy Spirit rest;
And make our secret soul to be

A temple pure, and worthy thee.

Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

5 So in the last and dreadful day,

When earth and heaven shall melt away,

Thy flock, redeemed from sinful stain,

Shall swell the sound of praise again.

Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

64

Behold the Bridegroom cometh."

REJOICE, rejoice, believers!

And let your lights appear;
The evening is advancing,
And darker night is near.
The Bridegroom is arising,

And soon he will draw nigh;
Up! pray, and watch, and wrestle!
At midnight comes the cry.

2 See that your lamps are burning,
Replenish them with oil;

Look now for your salvation,
The end of sin and toil.
The watchers on the mountain
Proclaim the Bridegroom near,

Go meet him as he cometh,
With hallelujahs clear.

3 O wise and holy virgins,

Now raise your voices higher,
Till, in your jubilations

Ye meet the angel choir.

The marriage-feast is waiting,
The gates wide open stand;
Up, up, ye heirs of glory!

The Bridegroom is at hand.

4 Our hope and expectation,
O Jesu, now appear;

Arise, thou Sun so longed for,

O'er this benighted sphere!

With hearts and hands uplifted,
We plead, O Lord, to see
The day of earth's redemption,
And ever be with thee!

"The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my
right hand, until I make thine enemies thy
footstool."

From the cx. Psalm.

HE Lord unto my Lord thus spake :

THE

"Till I thy foes thy footstool make,
Sit thou in state at my right hand :
Supreme in Sion thou shalt be,
And all thy proud opposers see

Subjected to thy just command.

2 "Thee, in thy power's triumphant day,
The willing people shall obey;

And, when thy rising beams they view,
Shall all (redeem'd from error's night)
Appear more numerous and bright

Than crystal drops of morning dew."

3 The Lord hath sworn, nor sworn in vain,
That, like Melchizedek's, thy reign.

And priesthood shall no period see;
Anointed Prince! thou, bending low,
Shalt drink where darkest torrents flow,
Then raise thy head in victory!

[SIX 85.
