2 From the Fount of glory b. aming, Light celestial chers our eyes; Mercy from above proclaiming

Peace and pardon from the skies.
3 Every stain of guilt abhorring,
Firm and bold in virtue's cause,
Still thy providence adoring,
Faithful subjects to thy laws, -
4 Lord! with faver still attend us,
Bless us with thy wondrous love;
Thou, our sun and shield, defend us;
All our hope is from above,

The Place of Praise.

1 COME to the house of prayer,

O thou afflicted, come;

The God of peace shall meet thee there;
He makes that house his home.

2 Come to the house of praise,
Ye who are happy now;
In sweet accord your voices raise,
In kindred homage bow.

3 Ye young, before his throne,
Come, bow; your voices raise;
Let not your hearts his praise disown,
Who gives the power to praise.

4 Ye aged, hither come,

For ye have felt his love;

Soon shall your trembling tongues be dumb,
Your lips forget to move.

5 Thou, whose benignant eye
In mercy looks on all;
Who see'st the tear of misery,
And hear'st the mourner's call;
6 Up to thy dwelling-place
Bear our frail spirits ou,

Till they outstrip time's tardy pace,
And heaven on earth be won.

God hears us.

1 GOD is so good that he will hear Whenever children humbly pray; He always lends a gracious ear

To what the youngest child can say. 2 His own most holy book declares, That, as a tender father will, He listens to our lowly prayers, And what we ask will grant us still. 3 He loves to hear a grateful tongue

Thank him for all his mercies given; And when on earth his praise is sung, The cheerful notes are heard in heaven.

7s M. Worship.

1 LORD, before thy presence come,
Bow we down with holy fear;
Call our erring footsteps home,
Let us feel that thou art wear.

2 Wandering thoughts and languid powers, Come not where devotion kneels; Let the soul expand her stores, Glowing with the joy she feels. 3 At the portals of thine house,

37

We resign our earth-born cares: Nobler thoughts our souls engross, Songs of praise and fervent prayers.

The Sunday School.

1 WITHIN these walls be peace;
Love through our borders found;
In all our little palaces
Prosperity abound.

2 God scorns not humble things;
Here, though the proud despise,
The children of the King of kings
Are training for the skies.

3 May none who thus are taught,
From glory be cast down,

But all, through faith and patience, brought,
To an immortal crown.

[blocks in formation]

1 ALMIGHTY Father, heavenly King!
Who rul'st the world above;

Accept the tribute children bring,
Of gratitude and love.

2 To thee, each morning, when we rise,
Our early vows we'll pay;

[ocr errors]

And ere the night has closed our eyes,
We'll thank thee for the day.

3 Our Saviour, ever good and kind,
To us his word has given,

That children, such as we, may find
A certain path to heaven.

4 Stretch out, O Lord, thy gracious hand,
To guide our erring youth;

And lead us to that blissful land
Where dwells eternal truth.

The House of God.

1 Lo, God is here! let us adore,

And humbly bow before his face: Let all within us feel his power,

Let all within us seek his grace. 2 Lo, God is here! him day and night United choirs of angels sing: To him, enthroned above all height, Heav'n's host their noblest homage bring

3 Being of beings! may our praise

Thy courts with grateful fragrance fill;
Still may we stand before thy face,
Still hear and do thy sovereign will.

[blocks in formation]

1 HERE let thy holy days be kept;

And be this place to worship given, Like that bright spot where Jacob slept, The house of God, the gate of heaven.

D

2 Here may thine honor dwell; and here, As incense, let thy children's prayer, From contrite hearts and lips sincere, Rise on the still and holy air.

3 Here be thy praise devoutly sung; Here let thy truth beam forth to save, As when of old thy spirit hung

On wings of light o'er Jordan's wave. 4 And when the lips, that with thy name Are vocal now, to dust shall turn,

41

On others may devotion's flame

Be kindled here, and purely burn.

The Temple.

1 BEHOLD US, Lord, with humble fear
Approach thy temple gate;

Though most unworthy to draw near,
Or in thy courts to wait.

2 But, trusting in thy boundless grace,
To all so freely given,

We worship in thy holy place,
And lift our souls to heaven.

3. Lead us in all thy righteous ways,
Nor let our footsteps slide:

Make straight thy path before our face,
Our guardian still, and guide.

4 No more to sin, Lord, let us yield,
Defended from above,

And kept, and covered with the shield
Of thy almighty love.
