Give ear to this thy family, And help us when we pray! For wide the waves of bitterness Around our vessel roar,
And heavy grows the pilot's heart, To view the rocky shore!
2 The cross our Master bore for us; For Him we fain would bear; But mortal strength to weakness turns, And courage to despair! Have mercy on our failings, Lord!
Our sinking faith renew!
And when his sorrows visit us, O send his patience too!
1 PEACE, troubled soul, whose plaintive moan Hath taught these rocks the notes of woe; Cease thy complaint, suppress thy groan, And let thy tears forget to flow; Behold the precious balm is found, To lull thy pain, to heal thy wound.
2 Come, freely come, by sin oppressed; Unburden here the weighty load; Here find thy refuge and thy rest, And trust the mercy of thy God. Thy God's thy Savior glorious word! Forever love and praise the Lord.
1 UNITE, my roving thoughts, unite In silence soft and sweet;
And thou, my soul, sit gently down At thy great Sovereign's feet.
2 Jehovah's awful voice is heard, Yet gladly I attend; For, lo! the everlasting God Proclaims himself my Friend.
3 Harmonious accents to my soul The sound of peace convey; The tempest at his word subsides, And winds and seas obey.
1 ALMIGHTY GOD, thy gracious power On every hand I see;
O, may the blessings of each hour Lead all my thoughts to thee!
2 If, on the wings of morn, I speed To earth's remotest bound, Thy hand will there my footsteps lead, Thy love my path surround.
3 Thy power is on the ocean deeps, And reaches to the skies;
Thine eye of mercy never sleeps, Thy goodness never dies.
4 From morn till noon, till latest eve, The hand of God I see;
And all the blessings I receive Ceaseless proceed from thee. 5 In all the varying scenes of time, On thee my hopes depend; Through every age, in every clime, My Father and my Friend!
1 THROUGH all the various, shifting scene Of life's mistaken ill or good, Thy hand, O God, conducts, unseen, The beautiful vicissitude.
2 Thou givest, with paternal care, Howe'er unjustly we complain, To all their necessary share
Of joy and sorrow, health and pain. 3 All things on earth, and all in heaven, On thine eternal will depend; And all for greater good were given, Would man pursue th' appointed end. 4 Be this my care! to all beside
Indifferent let my wishes be;
Passion be calm, and dumb be pride, And fixed my soul, great God, on thee.
1 FATHER of mercies, God of love, My Father and my God,
I'll sing the honor of thy name, And spread thy praise abroad.
2 In every period of my life Thy thoughts of love appear; Thy mercies gild each transient scene, And crown each lengthening year.
3 In every changing state of life, Each bright, each gloomy scene, Give me a meek and humble mind, Still equal and serene.
4 Then will I close my eyes in death, Free from distressing fear; For death itself is life, my God, If thou art with me there.
1 I WAITED patient for the Lord; He bowed to hear my cry; He saw me resting on his word, And brought salvation nigh.
2 Firm as a rock he made me stand, And taught my cheerful tongue To praise the wonders of his hand, And raise my soul in song.
3 How many are thy thoughts of love! Thy mercies, Lord, how great! We have not words, nor hours, enough Their numbers to repeat.
4 When I'm afflicted, poor, and low, And light and peace depart,
My God beholds my heavy woe, And bears me on his heart.
1 LEAD us, Heavenly Father, lead us O'er the world's tempestuous sea; Guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us, For we have no help but thee; Still possessing every blessing If our God our Father be.
2 Spirit of our God, descending,
Fill our hearts with heavenly joy, Love with kind affections blending, Pleasures time can never cloy. Thus provided, pardoned, guided, Nothing shall our peace destroy.
7s M. 61. The Child of God.
1 QUIET, Lord, my froward heart; Make me teachable and mild, Upright, simple, free from art; Make me as a weaned child; From distrust and envy free, Pleased with all that pleases thee. 2 What thou shalt to-day provide, Let me as a child receive; What to-morrow may betide, Calmly to thy wisdom leave: "Tis enough that thou wilt care; Why should I the burden bear? 3 As a little child relies
On a care beyond his own;
Knows he's neither strong nor wise; Fears to stir a step alone;
