7, Reynold Alleyne, the fourth son, was one of the first adventurers in the settlement of the Island of Barbadoes, and acquired a considerable estate there, the principal residence on which was by him named Mount Alleyne, and is now part of the possessions of Sir Reynold Alleyne, Bart. *.

He married Mary, daughter of Skeet (who afterwards married — Turner, of the Three Houses in the Thickets), by whom he had two sons and a daughter, Mary, wife of Rowse, of the Clift, whose descendants are still of note in the island. Of the sons, Reynold, the younger, died unmarried; but 8, Abel, the eldest, was member of council, and stiled by Oldmixon a lieutenant-general. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Denzy, by whom he had three sons and four daughters, of whom, Elizabeth was wife of Richard Parsons, of Mount Misery, and Lucy, of John Walter, of Busbridge, in the county of Surry, Esq. ; Mary, of William Dotin, of Grenada Hill; and Arabella, of Timothy Salter, of Salter's.

Of the sons, Benjamin, the youngest, was seated at Mount Stedfast, and married Arabella, daughter of —— Pilgrim, of St. George's, but died without issue. Reynold, the second, ancestor to the present Baronet, of whom hereafter.

Thomas Alleyne, the eldest son, succeeded his father at Mount Alleyne, was a brigadier-general, and member of the colonial assembly for St. James's. He married Judith, daughter of Sir Timothy Thornhill, of Kent, and of Barbadoes, Bart. by whom he had one daughter, Judith, wife of Littleton Meynill, of Bradley, in Derbyshire, and four sons; 1, Abel Alleyne, of Turner's Hall, Barbadoes, and of Squerrie's Court, in Kent, colonel of the Hole Town regiment, and member of the assembly for St. Andrews. He married Elizabeth, daughter and sole heiress of Sir William Booth, of Black Jacks, but died without issue; 2, Timothy Alleyne, purchased Black Jacks, and by, daughter of — Buttels, and relict of Holder, had one son Thomas, also of Black Jacks, who was member of the assembly for St. Andrews, and married Jane, daughter of - Rolleston, (who married secondly, - Ferguson, of Sandy Lane), but died without issue; and one daughter Mary, who, by her brother's death, became sole heiress, and

The system of arbitrary rule which, under King Charles I. and the system of open opposition to it in arms which had been carried to such excess in England, did not fail to raise among the colonists similar animosities; but the success of the republicans in Europe gave such advantage to that party in Barbadoes, as occasioned an unqualified opposition to the Lord Willoughby, the governor, against whom a deputation of several principal inhabitants, requesting assistance, was sent to England in 1650. Among these was Colonel Reynold Alleyne. Their expectation was fully answered; for, by a commission from Oliver Cromwell, a considerable military, as well as naval force, was sent to them under the command of Sir George Ascough.

The command, however, of all the troops that landed in Speight's Bay, Dec. 17, 1651, was given to the afore-mentioned Colonel Reynold Alleyne" who having (as Oldmixon, in his History of Barbadoes, says) a considerable interest in the island, was supposed to be the fittest man to lead the soldiers to gain it. The Barbadians under Lord Willoughby were posted on the shore very regularly, yet the English landed, and beat them up to their fort, which was on a sudden deserted by them after loss on both sides. On Sir George's, was that brave Barbadian, Colonel Alleyne, who was killed with a musquet shot, and much lamented, being a man of worth and honour." In consequence of this success, Lord Willoughby was forced to a capitulation of arms, which was soon followed by his embarkment for Europe.
