Thy truth shall break thro' ev'-ry cloud That veils and dark - ens thy de-signs.

Sel. 51.

[Ps. 36, P. 1. 12. Hast thou imparted to my soul
A living spark of holy fire?
O kindle now the sacred flame,
Make me to burn with pure desire.

(Stanza 1 in Music.)
2. For ever firm thy justice stands,
As mountains their foundations keep;
Wise are the wonders of thy hands,
Thy judgments are a mighty deep.

3. Thy providence is kind and large,
Both man and beast thy bounty share;
The whole creation is thy charge,
But saints are thy peculiar care.

4. My God, how excellent thy grace!
Whence all our hope and comfort springs;
The sons of Adam in distress
Fly to the shadow of thy wings.

5. From the provisions of thy house
We shall be fed with sweet repast;
There mercy, like a river, flows,
And brings salvation to our taste.

6. Life, like a fountain rich and free,
Springs from the presence of my Lord;
And in thy light our souls shall see
The glories promised in thy word.

5. In every pang that rends the heart, COME, sacred Spirit, from above,

The man of sorrows had a part;

He sympathizes in our grief,
And to the sufferer sends relief.

6. With boldness, therefore, at the throne,
Let us make all our sorrows known;
And ask the aids of heavenly power,
To help us in the evil hour.

[blocks in formation]

And fill the coldest heart with love: Soften to flesh the flinty stone, And let thy Godlike power be known.

2. Speak thou, and from the haughtiest eyes,

Shall floods of pious sorrow rise,
While all their glowing souls are borne,
To seek that grace which now they scorn.

3. O let a holy flock await,
Num'rous around thy temple gate;
Each pressing on, with zeal, to be
A living sacrifice to thee.

4. In answer to our fervent cries,
Give us to see thy church arise;
Or, if that blessing seem too great,
Give us to mourn its low estate.

2. His sovereign power, without our aid, Made us of clay, and form'd us men; And when, like wandering sheep, we stray'd,

He brought us to his fold again.
3. We are his people, we his care,
Our souls and all our mortal frame:
What lasting honors shall we rear,
Almighty Maker, to thy name!

4. We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs,

High as the heavens our voices raise : And earth, with her ten thousand tongues, Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.

5. Wide as the world is thy command, Vast as eternity thy love;

Firm as a rock thy truth must stand, When rolling years shall cease to move. Sel. 58.

[Ps. 117, P. 2.

FROM all that dwell below the skies,

Let the Creator's praise arise: Let the Redeemer's name be sung Through every land, by every tongue. 2. Eternal are thy mercies, Lord; Eternal truth attends thy word;

(Stanzas 4-6 omitted.)

[Ps. 57.

[blocks in formation]

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Thy praise shall sound from shore to Praise Him, all creatures here below;

shore,

Till suns shall set and rise no more.

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

on; March to the gates of end-less joy, Where Jesus &

thy great Captain's gone, Where Jesus thy great Captain's gone.

[H. 389. Sel. 62.

Sel. 61. (Stanza 1 in Music, 6 omitted.) 2. Hell and thy sins resist thy course, But hell and sin are vanquish'd foes; Thy Jesus nail'd them to the cross, And sung the triumph when He rose. 3. What though the prince of darkness

rage,

[ocr errors]

And waste the fury of his spite;
Eternal chains confine him down,
To fiery deeps and endless night.

4. What though thy inward lusts rebel;
'Tis but a struggling gasp for life:
The weapons of victorious grace
Shall slay thy sins and end the strife.
5. Then let my soul march boldly on,
Press forward to the heavenly gate;
There peace and joy eternal reign,
And glittering robes for conquerors wait.

[H. 596.

(Stanzas 3, 5 omitted.) YOD of the passing year, to thee

GOD

Our hymn of gratitude we raise; With swelling heart and bending knee, We offer thee our song of praise.

2. We bless thy name, almighty God,

For all the kindness thou hast shown
To this fair land our fathers trod,
This land we fondly call our own.

4. We praise thee, that the gospel light,
Through all our land its radiance sheds;
Scatters the shades of error's night,
And heavenly blessings round us spreads.
6. O God, preserve us in thy fear,
In troublous times our helper be;
Diffuse thy truth's bright precepts here,
And may we worship only thee.

1. LORD, I am thine, en - tirely thine, Purchased and saved by blood divine;

9:23

With full consent thine I would be, And own thy sov'reign right in me.
