In this, as in the former volume, much care has been taken to reprint faithfully the text of Johnson's translation of the canons, &c., and his notes upon them, all corrections and additions being made by marginal and foot notes within brackets. The corrections however of verbal errors, supplied from the addenda of the first edition, are not so marked. Johnson's notes are referred to, as in the first edition, by letters of the alphabet, and those of the editor by asterisks, &c.; the latter series of note marks are in both volumes frequently accompanied by an accent to shew how much of Johnson's translation is to be compared with the original quoted in the editor's note. The translations of the second volume are all from Latin documents, and they have been compared throughout with the Concilia of Wilkins as containing the best text of the originals, but other texts are sometimes quoted to shew how far particular parts of Johnson's translation are warranted by his own authorities. The edition of Lyndwood's Provinciale, Oxon. 1679, frequently referred to in this volume, comprises three distinct works, of various degrees of authority.
