AMAZING grace! how sweet the sound I once was lost, but now am found- 2 'T was grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed! 3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; 'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. 4 Yea-when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess, within the vail, 5 The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, who called me here below, 404. 1 WHENCE do our mournful thoughts arise, 2 Have we forgot th' almighty Name 3 Treasures of everlasting might In our Jehovah dwell; 1 How can I sink with such a prop Who bears the earth's huge pillars up 2 How can I die while Jesus lives, 3 All that I am, and all I have, 4 Yet, if I might make some reserve, And duty did not call, I love my God with zeal so great, 2 Why move ye thus, with lingering tread, 3 Oh! weak to know a Saviour's power, To feel a father's care; A moment's toil, a passing shower, 4 The orb of light, though clouds awhile May hide his noon-tide ray, Shall soon in lovelier beauty smile 5 And, bursting through the dusky shroud 6 Then, Christian, dry the falling tear, 407. 1 YE trembling souls! dismiss your fears, Be mercy all your theme; Mercy, which, like a river, flows, In one perpetual stream. 3 Fear not the want of outward good; 4 Fear not that he will e'er forsake, And faithful to his Son. 5 Fear not the terrors of the grave, 408. 1 WHEN I can read my title clear To mansions in the skies, I bid farewell to every fear, And wipe my weeping eyes. 2 Should earth against my soul engage, And fiery darts be hurled, 3 Let cares like a wild deluge come, 2 Fear not the powers of earth and hell;- 4 There shall I bathe my weary soul Those powers will God restrain; His arm shall all their rage repel, And make their efforts vain. In seas of heavenly rest; And not a wave of trouble roll Across my peaceful breast. 2 Though in a foreign land, We every moment come. 3 His grace will to the end Stronger and brighter shine, Nor present things, nor things to come, Shall quench the spark divine. 4 When we in darkness walk, Nor feel the heavenly flame, Then is the time to trust our God, And rest upon his name. 5 Soon shall our doubts and fears Subside at his control; 3 Still heavy is thy heart? 4 What though thou rulest not? Yet heaven, and earth, and hell Proclaim God sitteth on the throne, And ruleth all things well. 5 Leave to his sovereign sway, To choose and to command; 411. His loving-kindness shall break through 1 THE sun himself shall fade, The midnight of the soul. 6 Blest is the man, O God, That stays himself on thee! Who waits for thy salvation, Lord, 410. 1 GIVE to the winds thy fears, Hope, and be undismayed; God hears thy sighs, and counts thy tears, 2 Through waves, and clouds, and storms, shade, My Shepherd's with me there. 5 In spite of all my foes, Thou dost my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows, 6 The bounties of thy love Shall crown my future days; 1 THE harvest dawn is near, The year delays not long; And he who sows with many a tear, 2 Sad to his toil he goes, His seed with weeping leaves; 414. 1 How gentle God's commands! How kind his precepts are! Come, cast your burdens on the Lord, And trust his constant care. 2 Beneath his watchful eye 3 His saints securely dwell; That hand which bears all nature up, Shall guard his children well. Why should this anxious load Press down your weary mind? Haste to your heavenly Father's throne, 4 His goodness stands approved, 415. 1 I STAND on Zion's mount, And view my starry crown; No power on earth my hope can shake, Nor hell can thrust me down. 2 The lofty hills and towers, That lift their heads on high, Shall all be leveled low in dustTheir very names shall die. 3 The vaulted heavens shall fall, But firmer than the heavens, the Rock Breathe, oh, breathe thy loving spirit Let us find, thy promised rest: Let us all thy life receive! Speedily return, and never, Never more thy temples leave! 3 Finish then thy new creation, Pure, unspotted may we be: Let us see our whole salvation Perfectly secured by thee! Changed from glory into glory, Till in heaven we take our place; Till we cast our crowns before thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise. 417. 1 KNOW, my soul! thy full salvation; Rise o'er sin, and fear, and care; Joy to find, in every station, Something still to do or bear: Think what Spirit dwells within thee; Think what Father's smiles are thine; Think that Jesus died to win thee: Child of heaven, canst thou repine? 2 IIaste thee on from grace to glory, Armed by faith, and winged by prayer! Heaven's eternal day 's before thee, God's own hand shall guide thee there: Soon shall close thy earthly mission, Soon shall pass thy pilgrim days, Hope shall change to glad fruition, Faith to sight, and prayer to praise. 418. 1 HEAR what God, the Lord, hath spoken: Shall no more perplex your ways; You shall name your walls "Salvation," And your gates shall all be "Praise." 2 Ye no more your suns descending, Waning moons no more shall see; But your griefs forever ending, Find eternal noon in me: God shall rise, and, shining o'er you, Change to day the gloom of night; He, the Lord, shall be your Glory, God your everlasting Light. |
