AMAZING grace! how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found-
Was blind, but now I see.

2 'T was grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved;

How precious did that grace appear,

The hour I first believed!

3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come;

'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

4 Yea-when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease,

I shall possess, within the vail,
A life of joy and peace.

5 The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine;

But God, who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.

404.

1 WHENCE do our mournful thoughts arise,
And where's our courage fled ?
Has restless sin, or raging hell,
Struck all our comforts dead?

2 Have we forgot th' almighty Name
That formed the earth and sea?
And can an all-creating arm
Grow weary or decay?

3 Treasures of everlasting might In our Jehovah dwell;

[blocks in formation]

1 How can I sink with such a prop
As my eternal God,

Who bears the earth's huge pillars up
And spreads the heavens abroad?"

2 How can I die while Jesus lives,
Who rose and left the dead?
Pardon and grace my soul receives
From my exalted Head.

3 All that I am, and all I have,
Shall be forever thine;
Whate'er my duty bids me give,
My cheerful hands resign.

4 Yet, if I might make some reserve, And duty did not call,

I love my God with zeal so great,
That I should give him all.

2 Why move ye thus, with lingering tread,
A doubting mournful band?
Why faintly hangs the drooping head?
Why fails the feeble hand?

3 Oh! weak to know a Saviour's power, To feel a father's care;

A moment's toil, a passing shower,
Is all the grief ye
share.

4 The orb of light, though clouds awhile May hide his noon-tide ray,

Shall soon in lovelier beauty smile
To gild the closing day,-

5 And, bursting through the dusky shroud
That dared his power invest,
Ride throned in light o'er every cloud,
Triumphant to his rest.

6 Then, Christian, dry the falling tear,
The faithless doubt remove;
Redeemed at last from guilt and fear,
Oh! wake thy heart to love.

407.

1 YE trembling souls! dismiss your fears, Be mercy all your theme;

Mercy, which, like a river, flows,

In one perpetual stream.

3 Fear not the want of outward good;
For his he will provide,
Grant them supplies of daily food,
And all they need beside.

4 Fear not that he will e'er forsake,
Or leave his work undone;
He's faithful to his promises,

And faithful to his Son.

5 Fear not the terrors of the grave,
Nor death's tremendous sting;
He will, from endless wrath, preserve-
To endless glory bring.

408.

1 WHEN I can read my title clear To mansions in the skies,

I bid farewell to every fear, And wipe my weeping eyes. 2 Should earth against my soul engage,

And fiery darts be hurled,
Then I can smile at Satan's rage,
And face a frowning world.

3 Let cares like a wild deluge come,
And storms of sorrow fall;
May I but safely reach my home,
My God, my heaven, my all!

2 Fear not the powers of earth and hell;- 4 There shall I bathe my weary soul

Those powers will God restrain;

His arm shall all their rage repel, And make their efforts vain.

In seas of heavenly rest; And not a wave of trouble roll

Across my peaceful breast.

2 Though in a foreign land,
We are not far from home,
And nearer to our house above

We every moment come.

3 His grace will to the end

Stronger and brighter shine,

Nor present things, nor things to come, Shall quench the spark divine.

4 When we in darkness walk,

Nor feel the heavenly flame, Then is the time to trust our God, And rest upon his name.

5 Soon shall our doubts and fears

Subside at his control;

3 Still heavy is thy heart?
Still sink thy spirits down?
Cast off the weight, let fear depart,
And every care be gone.

4 What though thou rulest not?

Yet heaven, and earth, and hell Proclaim God sitteth on the throne, And ruleth all things well.

5 Leave to his sovereign sway,

To choose and to command;
So shalt thou, wondering, own his way
How wise, how good his hand!

411.

His loving-kindness shall break through 1 THE sun himself shall fade,

The midnight of the soul.

6 Blest is the man, O God,

That stays himself on thee!

Who waits for thy salvation, Lord,
Shall thy salvation sec.

410.

1 GIVE to the winds thy fears,

Hope, and be undismayed;

God hears thy sighs, and counts thy tears,
God shall lift up thy head.

2 Through waves, and clouds, and storms,
He gently clears the way;
Wait thou his time; so shall this night
Soon end in joyous day.

shade,

My Shepherd's with me there.

5 In spite of all my foes,

Thou dost my table spread;

My cup with blessings overflows,
And joy exalts my head.

6 The bounties of thy love

Shall crown my future days;
Nor from thy house will I remove,
Nor cease to speak thy praise.
413.

1 THE harvest dawn is near,

The year delays not long;

And he who sows with many a tear,
Shall reap with many a song.

2 Sad to his toil he goes,

His seed with weeping leaves;
But he shall come, at twilight's close,
And bring his golden sheaves.

414.

1 How gentle God's commands! How kind his precepts are!

Come, cast your burdens on the Lord, And trust his constant care.

2 Beneath his watchful eye

3

His saints securely dwell;

That hand which bears all nature up,

Shall guard his children well.

Why should this anxious load

Press down your weary mind?

Haste to your heavenly Father's throne,
And sweet refreshment find.

4 His goodness stands approved,
Unchanged from day to day:
I'll drop my burden at his feet,
And bear a song away.

415.

1 I STAND on Zion's mount,

And view my starry crown; No power on earth my hope can shake, Nor hell can thrust me down.

2 The lofty hills and towers,

That lift their heads on high, Shall all be leveled low in dustTheir very names shall die.

3 The vaulted heavens shall fall,
Built by Jehovah's hands;

But firmer than the heavens, the Rock
Of my
salvation stands !

Breathe, oh, breathe thy loving spirit
Into every troubled breast!
Let us all in thee inherit,

Let us find, thy promised rest:
Come, Almighty to deliver,

Let us all thy life receive! Speedily return, and never,

Never more thy temples leave! 3 Finish then thy new creation, Pure, unspotted may we be: Let us see our whole salvation Perfectly secured by thee! Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place; Till we cast our crowns before thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise. 417.

1 KNOW, my soul! thy full salvation; Rise o'er sin, and fear, and care; Joy to find, in every station,

Something still to do or bear: Think what Spirit dwells within thee; Think what Father's smiles are thine; Think that Jesus died to win thee:

Child of heaven, canst thou repine?

2 IIaste thee on from grace to glory, Armed by faith, and winged by prayer! Heaven's eternal day 's before thee,

God's own hand shall guide thee there: Soon shall close thy earthly mission,

Soon shall pass thy pilgrim days, Hope shall change to glad fruition,

Faith to sight, and prayer to praise.

418.

1 HEAR what God, the Lord, hath spoken:
O my people, faint and few,
Comfortless, afflicted, broken,
Fair abodes I build for you;
Scenes of heartfelt tribulation

Shall no more perplex your ways; You shall name your walls "Salvation," And your gates shall all be "Praise." 2 Ye no more your suns descending, Waning moons no more shall see; But your griefs forever ending,

Find eternal noon in me: God shall rise, and, shining o'er you, Change to day the gloom of night; He, the Lord, shall be your Glory, God your everlasting Light.
