64. A gallery is required across the end of a church 40 ft. wide, with four rows of seats and a gangway at back. It is to be carried by rolled steel joists from the back and side walls, and by two cast-iron columns in front, 20 ft. centre to centre. Draw cross section showing the constructional ironwork and woodwork. Scale in. to a foot.

(70) 65. Draw to a scale of in. to a foot a cross section through the floor of a ball-room on the ground floor 80 ft. by 40 ft., and write a short specification for constructing it.

(70) 66. Assuming a mean working stress of 4 tons per square inch, draw one quarter full size the cross section of a built-up steel stanchion not exceeding 12 inches square to carry 100 tons. Show the rivets in the section and state the pitch; give the dimensions of the parts and the total weight per foot run. State the area of the base plate which you would adopt, and the mode of determining it.

67. A damp site 60 ft. by 40 ft. requires to be drained before building operations are commenced. Draw to a scale of 10 ft. to 1 in. a plan of the site showing the arrangement of the pipes, and a cross section (scale 1 in. to a foot) through one row of pipes in position in the trench, showing the ground level. Describe the pipes which you would use.

*68. The diagram (fig. 68) shows the plan of a circular angle turret on the first floor of a building the walls of which are of Portland stone; the dotted lines show the square corner of the walls on the ground floor. Draw to a scale of to a foot a cross section on the line A A and an elevation of the turret, including its roof, which is to be also of stone. Show clearly the jointing of the stones and the method of construction to ensure stability.

69. What are the requirements of the Local Government Byelaws as to half-timber construction? Show by sketches how the modern work which complies with these regulations would differ from genuine old half-timber work of the 15th century.

*70. The plan (fig. 70) shows the ground floor of a country house with projecting bay, the walls being of brick. The upper storey is of half-timber construction and projects 15 in. beyond the ground floor. Draw an elevation, in. to a foot, of the two stories and the roof of the bay; the main roof need only be shown as high as the ridge of the bay; height of ground floor above ground 2 ft., from ground floor to first floor 13 ft. 6 in., and from first floor to ceiling 10 ft. The first-floor windows are immediately over those shown on ground floor. (80)

NOTE. The subject for the design at the Practical Examination to be held at South Kensington, or some other centre, will be "A corner shop with 3 floors of self-contained flats over it."

The time allowed for this examination is twelve hours.

PRACTICAL EXAMINATION-DESIGN.

The diagram shows a site at the corner of two streets, with a frontage of 39' 6" to the main street and of 46' 0" to the side. Upon this site is to be erected a large shop, occupying the ground floor and basement, with three floors over, each of which is to consist of one self-contained flat. The private entrance to the staircase to flats is to be at the extreme end of the side street frontage, and the staircase is to be taken down to the basement and to give access to three coal cellars constructed under the pavement. The area in basement, between the building line and the pavement, to be covered with pavement lights over the entire frontage to the main street, and for a distance of 20 feet down the side street, the remainder being left as an open area in the basement and enclosed with iron railings up to the private entrance. The shop and basement may extend over the whole site except the private staircase, but the upper floors must not be carried back further than the dotted line ABC. The shop is to have two entrances, and there is to be a small private office in rear, and a staircase 3' 6" wide from ground floor to basement. The party walls OP and OQ may be considered as already built, and of sufficient height for the new building. Three W.C.s and at least four lavatory basins are to be provided in the basement, under the pavement where the open area exists. The accommodation on each upper floor is to comprise sitting-room, kitchen with sink, three bedrooms, all with fireplaces, larder and pantry, bath room and W.C., the entrance door to flat being on the staircase landing.

Drawings required:

1. Plans of the basement, ground, and first floors, the two former showing clearly the position and size of the stancheons or piers supporting the walls, &c., of the residences over. No counters or other shop-fittings need be shown.

2. One section, which need not be taken higher than the first floor ceiling.

3. Two elevations, one to each street, the window openings to be shown fully on first floor, but indicated only on two upper floors. All the above to a scale of 4 feet to an inch.

4. A detail elevation of the private entrance doorway to a scale of 1 inch to a foot.

State the approximate cost of the building and how you arrive at it.
