Mathematical tables, without any treatise, may be used, and by Candidates taking Stage 3 or Honours, the Nautical Almanac for the current year may also be used; otherwise you may not have with you any books, notes, or paper other than that supplied for use at this examination.

Stage 1.

You are permitted to answer only eight questions, viz., four out of each of the sections into which the paper is divided.

The examination in this subject lasts for three hours.

SECTION I.

1. Explain the terms: Equator, Meridian, Parallel of Latitude, Latitude and Longitude of a place on the Earth.

A ship sails on a parallel of latitude from longitude 40° W. to 75° W. How much longer would the voyage be if made on the parallel of 35° N. than of 50° N.? (14) 2. What corrections have to be applied to the Compass Course to convert it into a True Course, and why are they necessary?

The north point of a compass sent ashore at Valparaiso pointed N. 15° E., and when the compass was returned to the ship it set N. 8° E.; what conclusions would you draw as to the amount of Variation and Deviation respectively? (10) 3. Show how the local time at a place depends upon the longitude of the place.

What is the time at Mauritius in longitude 58° E. when it is 7h 30m P.M. at Greenwich?

4. Describe generally the methods of obtaining soundings in deep and shallow waters respectively. (12) 5. By Dead Reckoning a ship was in lat. 37° 50' N., long. 41° 52′ W. By observations her position was lat. 38° 1' N., long. 42° 5' W. Apply the Traverse Table to find the set and drift of Current.

6. Explain what is meant by Middle Latitude, and state and prove the formula employed in this method of computation.

(12) 7. A ship steamed at the rate of 12 knots from Albany (lat. 35° 3' S., long. 118° 2′ E.) to Cape Catastrophe (lat. 35° 3' S., long. 135° 58′ E.). How long did she take on the voyage?

8. Find the true course and distance from Funchal (lat. 32° 37' N., long. 16° 54′ W.) to Gibraltar (lat. 36° 7′ N., long. 5° 21′ W.). (8) 9. A ship sailed from Port Elizabeth (lat. 34° 7′ S., long. 25° 40′ E.) S.E.S., until her departure was 397'; find her position at the time. (12) 10. 11. A ship left a position from which Cape Clear (lat. 51° 26' N., long. 9° 29′ W.) boře N.E. by E. 12.5 miles distant, and sailed South 150' and then West 290 miles. Find the bearing and distance of Cape Clear from the ship in her last position.
