IN CALAMITATEM.

QUE Sævo domitos imperio regis
Mortales, superi nata Jovis Dea,
Dira non sine pœna et

Flagris improba ferreis

Pertentans homines; unde adamantinis
Sub vinclis trepidum comprimitur Nefas,
Angunturque malorum

Seris pectora luctibus,

Nec puri sceleris non animi dolent;
Te reges dominam purpurei novam,
Deserti sociorum,

Te vano gemitu tremunt.

Cum lectam generi mittere filiam
Humano voluit cœlicolum Pater

Virtutem, tibi diam

Commisit sobolem Deus,

Ut prudens teneræ pectora fingeres.
Ah quanta rigidam te patientia,

Nutrix aspera, longis

Virtus temporibus tulit!

.

Sensit, qua miseris fracta doloribus

Mens cura gemeret: sensit, et haud suo,

Te perdocta magistra,

Luctu tangitur invicem.

SANDY'S GHOST.

THE Moon had climbed the highest hill
Which rises o'er the source of Dee,
And from the eastern summit shed

Her silvery light o'er tower and tree;

When Mary laid her down to sleep,

Her thoughts on Sandy far at sea, When low and soft a voice she heard

6

Say- Mary, weep no more for me.'

She from her pillow gently raised

Her head, to see who there might be;
She saw young Sandy shivering stand,
With visage pale and hollow e'e.

'O Maiden dear, cold is my clay,
'It lies beneath a stormy sea;
Far far from thee I sleep in death,
'So, Mary,-weep no more for me.

'O Maiden dear, thyself prepare,

'We soon shall meet upon that shore
'Where love is free from doubt and care,
'And we shall meet to part no more.'

Loud crowed the cock; the Shadow fled;
No more of Sandy could she see;
But soft the parting Spirit said-
'Sweet Mary, weep no more for me.'

OLD BALLAD.

ALEXIS UMBRA.

QUOD perlucentis spectat cunabula Devæ,

Luna

super summum fulserat alba jugum ; Argentique faces Eoi a vertice cœli Sparserat in sylvas turrigerasque domos.

In lecto composta suum jam Phyllis Alexin
Visa erat in somnis per freta longa sequi,
Quum pressum irrepsit murmur-Mea Phylli, quiescas;
'Desine torqueri quod tuus absit Amor.'

[ocr errors]

Sustulit a mosto tremulum caput illa cubili,
Quæsitum in thalamo quis sit et unde suo;
Et stare algentem pede lecti vidit Alexin,
Exsangui vultu luminibusque cavis.

'Sternor ego exanimis, vita O mihi carior ipsa,
Intempestivo pulvis et ossa mari;

Te procul accumbo morti-mea Phylli, quiescas;

6

Nequicquam quereris, quod tuus absit Amor.

'Suave meum, non longa mora est—modo mollia tangas

• Numina quin sacra congrediamur humo;

Qua manet inconcussa Fides, secura laborum ;

Qua nunquam amplexu diripiere meo.'

Fortiter increpuit gallus: vaga fugit Imago:
Vanuit ex oculis quod fuit omne viri,

TAFFY WAS A WELSHMAN.

TAFFY was a Welshman, and Taffy was a thief,
Taffy came to my house and stole a bit of beef;
I went to Taffy's house; Taffy wasn't at home;
Taffy came to my house and stole a marrow bone.
I went to Taffy's house; Taffy was in bed;

[blocks in formation]

the marrow bone and beat about his head. GAMMER GURTON.

MAD TOM.

I AM mad Tom, behold me!

My senses are gone from me;
I'm mad, I'm sure,

I'm past all cure,

And Bedlam scarce can hold me.

I'll climb yon lofty mountain,

And there I'll fight the gypsies ;

I'll play at bowls

With the sun and moon,

And beat them both to eclipses.

I'm wiser than Apollo;

For while he lay a sleeping,

I saw the stars

At mortal jars,

While Vulcan was a weeping.

ANON.

QUOD FECERIM CUM TAFFIO.
TAFFIUS in Cimbris natus, fur Taffius idem;
Accessitque fores nostras, carnemque bovillam
Surripuit frustra pulsabam limina Taffi,

Ille aberat-rediitque meos, velut ante, penates
Osque medullosum malus abstulit. Ipse reversus
Invenisse domi furem lectoque reclinem
Lætor, et osse caput rapto sine judice cædo.

THOMAS DEMENS.

ECCE, furens Thomas! Sensus fugere, nec ullam
Suggerit insano cura medentis opem ;
Distrahor, accendor flammis-quid ferrea possunt
Claustra, quid Anticyræ jugera tota mihi?

Impiger adversi scandam juga devia montis,
Atque Ægyptiaco cum grege bella geram;
Ire pilis lusum cum Luna et Sole parabor,
Condiderit nitidum donec uterque latus.

Non quenquam fugio vel Apolline doctior ipso;
In roseo nam dum dormiit ille toro,
Astra inter niveas vidi pugnantia nubes,
Vulcani in fuscis imbre madente genis.
