5 O then that thy most holy will
Might o'er my ways preside;
And I the course of all my life
By thy direction guide!

222 "Her ways are ways of pleasantness and C. M.

all her paths are peace."

HAPPY is the man who hears
Religion's warning voice,

And who celestial wisdom makes
His early, only choice.

2 For she has treasures greater far
Than east or west unfold;
More precious are her bright rewards
Than gems, or stores of gold.
3 Her right hand offers to the just
Immortal, happy days;

Her left, imperishable wealth
And heavenly crowns displays.
4 And, as her holy labours rise,
So her rewards increase;

Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace.

223

"That signs and wonders may be done by 88. 78. the name of the holy child Jesus."

W From the book of God is read ;

THAT a strange and wondrous story

How the Lord of life and glory

Had not where to lay his head ;

2 How he left his throne in heaven,
Here to suffer, bleed, and die,
That my soul might be forgiven,
And ascend to God on high!

3 Father! let thy Holy Spirit Still reveal a Saviour's love, And prepare me to inherit

Glory where he reigns above.

4 There, with saints and angels dwelling,
May I that great love proclaim,
And with them be ever telling
All the wonders of his name.

224

"The child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, C. M. filled with wisdom; and the grace of God

was upon him."

BY cool Siloam's shady rill

How fair the lily grows

!

How sweet the breath, beneath the hill,
Of Sharon's dewy rose !

2 Lo! such the child, whose early feet
The paths of peace have trod,
Whose secret heart, with influence sweet,
Is upward drawn to God.

3 By cool Siloam's shady rill

The lily must decay;

The rose that blooms beneath the hill
Must shortly fade away.

4 And soon, too soon, the wintry hour
Of man's maturer age

Will shake the soul with sorrow's power,
And stormy passion's rage.

5 0 thou, whose infant feet were found
Within thy Father's shrine,

Whose years, with changeless virtue crown'd, Were all alike divine:

6 Dependent on thy bounteous breath,
We seek thy grace alone,

In childhood, manhood, age and death,
To keep us still thine own.

225 "Little children keep yourselves from idols.” 6s. 58.

JESon of God most high,

ESUS, meek and gentle

Pitying, loving Saviour,
Hear thy children's cry.

2 Pardon our offences,
Loose our captive chains,
Break down every idol
Which our soul detains.
3 Give us holy freedom,
Fill our hearts with love;
Draw us, holy Jesus,

To the realms above.

4 Lead us on our journey,
Be thyself the way,
Through terrestrial darkness
To celestial day.

5 Jesus, meek and gentle,
Son of God most high,
Pitying, loving Saviour,
Hear thy children's cry.

[blocks in formation]

How he call'd little children as lambs to his fold,

I should like to have been with them then. 2 I wish that his hands had been placed on my head,

That his arm had been thrown around me, And that I might have seen his kind look when he said,

Let the little ones come unto me. 3 Yet still to his footstool in prayer I may go, And ask for a share in his love; And if I thus earnestly seek him below, I shall see him and hear him above,

4 In that beautiful place he has gone to prepare For all who are washed and forgiven; And many dear children shall be with him there,

For of such is the kingdom of heaven.

5 But thousands and thousands who wander and fall,

Never heard of that heavenly home;

I wish they could know there is room for them all,

And that Jesus has bid them to come.

Scatter'd gleanings we may gather,
Though we are but young and few;
Little clusters

Help to fill the garners too.

2 Toiling early in the morning,
Catching moments through the day
Nothing small or lowly scorning
While we work, and watch, and pray;
Gathering gladly

Free-will offerings by the way,

3 Not for selfish praise or glory,
Not for objects nothing worth,
But to send the blessed story
Of the Gospel o'er the earth,
Telling mortals

Of our Lord and Saviour's birth.

4 Up and ever at our calling,

Till in death our lips are dumb,
Or till-sin's dominion falling-
Christ shall in his kingdom come,
And his children

Reach their everlasting home.

5 Steadfast, then, in our endeavour,
Heavenly Father, may we be;
And for ever, and for ever,

We will give the praise to thee;
Alleluia!

Singing, all eternity.

228 “Write them upon the table of thine heart.” L. M.

WRITE upon my memory, Lord,

The text and doctrine of thy word;

That I may break thy laws no more,
But love thee better than before.
