linger over this. We have only, in conclusion, to notice, that although he has published Seven Letters of reply, Mr. Wilberforce has, nevertheless, not attempted to explain how it was that the wording of his note (p. 387) became so arranged as to give his readers the idea that some spurious passages of S. Cyprian are genuine-how he failed to quote the passages in S. Chrysostom with regard to S. John, and S. Paul, and S. James, which counter-balance those which he has quoted with regard to S. Peter (p. 401)-how he led his readers to come to a false conclusion as to Ambrosiaster's opinion of the relation of SS. Peter and Paul to each other (p. 402)-how he came to omit an important clause in the famous Sardican Canon (p. 420)—how it was that he has made no mention of the Ninth Canon of Chalcedon (p. 421)-how he failed to state that Meletius was President of the Council of Constantinople (p. 429)-how he represented S. Cyril as delegated to sit at Ephesus by a 'commission' issued by Celestine, which 'commission' was issued by Celestine for a distinct object, and before he knew that there was to be a Council of Ephesus at all (p. 425)-how he was led to say that the sentence on Dioscorus was founded on Leo's Letter (p. 431)-how he came to omit the Fifth Council (p. 437)— how he failed to tell of the excommunication of Pope Honorius at the Sixth Council (p. 438)-how he came to confuse the preamble and enactments of 24 Henry VIII. c. 12, (p. 447) -how it was that he quoted only half of a sentence of Bramhall when the rest was not favourable to his views. (p. 450.) Perhaps we can scarcely wonder at the occurrence of some of these things when we regard the form into which Mr. Wilberforce has thrown his book. A work which appeals largely to authorities ought not to be composed, after the fashion of a mosaic, with one piece taken from here, and another piece taken from there, fitted violently and artistically together. When the Fathers are quoted, they should be quoted at some length, in order that the reader may see the context as well as certain isolated expressions. If Mr. Wilberforce would prefer the testimony of a Priest of his adopted Communion to own, we can refer him, without fear, to the Abbé Prompsault's Du Siége du Pouvoir ecclésiastique, which has been placed upon the Index, for maintaining principles almost identical with our own, in opposition to the Ultramontane doctrines to which Rome is now committed, and Mr. Wilberforce has apparently given his adhesion.
