DEAR SIR, AMONG the few who yet survive of those with whom we shared the acquaintance of Dr. Priestley, your name would readily occur to me, and I have the pleasure of prefixing it to a Volume which completes his now first collected Theological and Miscellaneous Works; a favourite project, to which you freely tendered an early encouragement. Your exertions in public life, either to advance the most valuable interests of our country, or to vindicate the rights and to improve the condition of man, however degraded by long-endured oppression, or distinguished by colour, creed, or climate, appear in the records of British history. Nor can I easily forget our frequent associations to promote those objects of just and enlightened policy, which are alike conducive to the investigation of truth, the purity of religion, and the equitable administration of civil government.
