DEMONSTRATIONS WITH THE LARYNGOSCOPE.

Dr. SIMPSON will give instruction in the use of the Laryngoscope and the application of remedies to the throat, in the months of January, February, and March, at ten o'clock on Tuesday mornings.

FEVER HOSPITAL.

Dr. WILKINSON will attend at the Monsall Fever Hospital every Saturday morning during the Winter Session, at eleven o'clock, for the purpose of giving Senior Students an opportunity of gaining Clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cases of fever, smallpox, scarlet fever, measles, and other contagious diseases.

CLINICAL OPHTHALMIC SURGERY.

Mr. WINDSOR will give a practical lesson on the examination of the eye and its accessory parts each Monday morning at 11 o'clock, in the out-patient room, Royal Infirmary.

The method of examining during life each constituent of the eye, anatomically and physiologically, will be as far as possible shown to, and practised by, the student. The course will include the use of the ophthalmoscope in diagnosing the diseases of the fundus, and of glasses in determining errors of refraction and accommodation.

Mr. WINDSOR will give clinical instruction in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye in the outpatient room, Tuesday and Friday, at 11 o'clock.

DISEASES OF WOMEN.-OBSTETRIC PRACTICE.

Dr. THORBURN will conduct a class of clinical instruction in the Diseases of Women at the Royal Infirmary, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, at ten o'clock, during the Winter Session.

Midwifery cases can be attended by students of the Infirmary, under the direction of Dr, Thorburn.

DENTAL SURGERY.

Mr. G. W. SMITH will give instruction in the operations of Dental Surgery, and the management of the teeth in the out-patient department, on Wednesdays, at nine o'clock.

MENTAL DISEASES.

Mr. G. W. MOULD will give demonstrations of the various forms of insanity to senior students during the Summer Session, at such times and places as shall be hereafter arranged.

PRACTICAL PHARMACY.

Instruction in Practical Pharmacy is given in thè Laboratory and Dispensary of the Infirmary on the payment of a fee, for three months, of three guineas; for six months, five guineas.

VACCINATION.

The Certificates of Proficiency and Instruction in Vaccination required by the Privy Council and the Royal College of Surgeons may be received from Mr. ELLIS GUEST, at 72, Rochdale Road, subject to the payment of the fee charged by that gentleman.

ASSOCIATESHIP.

[Extract from the General Bye-Laws of the College.] 1. The grade of Associate of the Owens College will be conferred on all candidates who shall possess the three qualifications following, namely:

(a) They shall have been students of the College
during three years, that is to say, they shall have
attended during each of three years not fewer than
three courses, the total number of lectures in each
year averaging not fewer than twelve weekly.
(b) They shall have obtained a degree of some Uni-
versity in the United Kingdom, or a certificate of
having passed an examination either in Arts or
Science as provided in § 2; and

(c) They shall have obtained a certificate of satisfac-
tory conduct and attendance from the Principal
and from each of the Professors whose classes have
been attended by them.

2. An examination for the grade of Associate in addition to any preliminary examination will be held in October in each year. Candidates will be required on or

before the 15th of September to give written notice to the Registrar of their intention to offer themselves for examination either in Arts or in Science.

A. Candidates in Arts must undergo examination under two of the three following heads: (a) Greek and Latin; (b) Pure Mathematics;

One of the following: -(1) English Language and Literature; (2) Ancient and Modern History; (3) Any two of the three following languages, namely, French, German, and Italian; (4) Logic, with either Mental and Moral Philosophy or Political Economy; (5) Jurisprudence and Law; And they must produce a certificate of having passed a satisfactory examination in the elements of Natural Philosophy or Chemistry,

B. Candidates in Science must undergo examination under two of the three following heads :— (a) Mathematics Pure or Applied;

(b) Physics or Chemistry;

(c) One of the following:-(1) Animal Physiology and Zoology, and Botany; (2) Geology and Palæontology; (3) Engineering;

And they must produce a certificate of having passed a satisfactory examination in the elements of Greek and Latin, or of English and another Modern Language.

Candidates who may have gained in the same or any preceding year any of the following Scholarships shall be held to have satisfied the Examiners in the subjects severally annexed:

Victoria Scholarship (Greek and Latin).

Shakspere Scholarship (English Language and Literature).

Dalton Chemical Scholarship (Chemistry).

Dalton Senior Mathematical Scholarship (Pure Mathematics).

Ashbury Scholarship (Engineering).

3. Associates are entitled to exercise, subject to the regulations of the College, the following privileges:

(a) The right of voting at the election of three members of the Court of Governors.

(b) Admission to such lectures, and on such terms, as the Council shall from time to time direct.

(c) The use of the Library and admission to the College Dining room.

The following are the Regulations, for the time being, referred to in § 3, as respects the admission of Associates to Lectures:

1. Associates in Arts (including persons elected as having passed the Examination in Arts (Bye-Law 2 A supra), or as holding degrees in Arts or Laws) are entitled to free admission to the following Day Lecture Classes: Greek, Latin, Pure Mathematics, English Language and Literature, Ancient and Modern History, French, German, Italian, Logic and Mental and Moral Philosophy, Political Economy, and Jurisprudence and Law.

Associates in Science (including persons elected as having passed the Examination in Science (Bye-Law 2 B supra), or as holding degrees in Science or Medicine) are entitled to free admission to the following Day Lecture Classes:-Mathematics (Pure and Applied), Physics, Chemistry, Animal Physiology and Zoology, Botany, Geology and Palæontology, and Engineering.

Associates availing themselves of free admission are not thereby qualified for competition for Class Prizes, Exhibitions, and Scholarships.

N.B.-Associates elected before the 1st of January, 1873, will continue to enjoy the privilege of free admission to all Day Lecture Classes, exclusive of all Practical Instruction, such as that given in the Laboratories and in Drawing and Surveying Classes, and of all strictly Medical Classes.

2. Associates, whether elected before or since the 1st January, 1873, are not entitled to free admission to Evening Classes, except so far as special provision therefor may be made.

[The regulations for admission to the Associateship of persons qualified only in respect of Medical Studentship are reserved for future consideration.]

4. Applications for election to the grade of Associate must be laid before the Senate at its November meeting. The Senate will report thereon to the Council, by whom the election will be made.

5. The Court may elect, on the recommendation of the Senate, former students of the College who, though not possessed of the foregoing qualifications, shall have distinguished themselves in Literature, Science, or Art, or in some career of public usefulness; provided that no person shall be so recommended within five years after his studentship shall have ceased.

6. Every Associate shall hold his Associateship and enjoy its privileges subject to the Bye-Laws and Regulations for the time being in force in the College, and may be deprived of it by the Court on the recommendation of the Council after report from the Senate.

7. A Register of Associates shall be kept by the Registrar under the direction of the Council.

The Registrar shall enter on such list the addresses of all Associates as from time to time furnished by them, with the dates when they were respectively admitted to the grade of Associate; and shall from time to time mark off the names of such as may die or cease to be Associates.

NOMINATION OF MEMBERS OF THE COURT OF GOVERNORS.

8. Whenever a vacancy in the number of Governors to be nominated by the Associates shall be notified to the College, the Registrar shall cause to be printed a copy of his list of the Associates for the time being.

9. Every nomination of a Governor by the Associates shall be made at a meeting to be held in the College and to be convened for the purpose as after mentioned, by the Registrar under the direction of the Council, within three calendar months after the notification of the vacancy to the College.

10. Associates wishing to propose a person or persons for nomination shall send to the Registrar fourteen days at least before the meeting a memorandum proposing such person or persons, signed by two or more Associates, and containing the name and address of each person proposed.

11. Twenty-eight days at least before the day appointed for the meeting the Registrar shall send to each Associate whose address is registered, a notice summoning him to attend such meeting, and stating the time at which it is to be held and the number of Governors to be then nominated, together with a copy of the printed list of Associates.

12. At every such meeting the President, or in his absence the Treasurer, or in the absence of both a Governor deputed for the purpose by the Council or (in case of need) by the Treasurer, shall preside. Any member of the Court may be present, but no such member except the Chairman of the meeting shall take part in the pro ceedings, unless he be himself an Associate.
