SESSION 1876-7.

ARTS, SCIENCE, AND LAW DEPARTMENT. The Session will be opened with an Introductory Address by Robert Adamson, Esq., M.A., the Professor of Logic, Mental and Moral Philosophy, and Political Economy, on Tuesday, the 3rd of October, 1876, and will end on Friday, the 22nd of June, 1877, and will comprise the following terms, viz.:

The College is closed on the Monday in Whitsuntide, 21st May.

REGULATIONS FOR ADMISSION OF STUDENTS.*

1. Persons seeking admission as students must have attained the age of 14 years, and those who are under 16 will be required to pass a preliminary examination, to be held on Friday the 29th, and Saturday the 30th September, from 10 to 1, in English, Arithmetic, and the Elements of Latin. Every candidate for admission will be required to produce a testimonial of good character from his last instructor or such other testimonial as shall be satisfactory to the Principal.

2. The Principal will attend at the College, for the purpose of admitting students, on Wednesday the 27th, Thursday the 28th, Friday the 29th September, and Monday the 2nd October, from 10.30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The registration will be continued on succeeding days, except Saturdays, between 12.30 and 2.30 p.m.

3. Each student is, on admission, required to sign a declaration that he will observe the Bye-Laws and Regulations of the College for the time being.

4. A card of admission to the several classes is issued at the office of the College, on the presentation of a certificate signed by the Principal, and on payment of the fees. No student is entitled to attend the classes until he has complied with this regulation.

5. In addition to the Lecture Fees each student, on first entering the College, is required to pay the Admission Fee, £1 1s., and the Library Fee, 5s.

Students desiring to attend but one or two courses of lectures may, if they prefer it, pay in lieu of the Admission Fee a Sessional Fee of 7s. for each class attended (other than a Laboratory or other Practical Class), but in this case the payment of the Sessional Fee must be repeated for every future session. Students paying the Sessional Fee may at their choice obtain admittance to the use of the Library on the same terms as other students.

EXTRACT FROM THE BYE-LAWS OF THE COLLEGE CONCERNING DISCIPLINE AND PUNISHMENT.

§ 91.

Every student shall be subject to such regulations as shall from time to time be passed by the Senate and confirmed by the Council.

$92.

The Senate shall, at its first meeting in each session, elect a Committee of three members to assist the Principal in the investigation and treatment of such breaches of discipline as he may judge it necessary to bring before them.

$93.

The Registrar shall be associated with the Principal and Professors in the maintenance of the discipline of the College.

§ 94.

The Principal may suspend any student from attendance on any class or classes, and may exclude any student from any part of the College or its precincts. He shall report every such suspension or exclusion to the Senate, at its next ordinary or special meeting, for further adjudication, and the Senate may continue such suspension or exclusion or extend the same as, and for such period (not extending beyond the end of the then current session) as, they may think fit.

In grave cases of misconduct the Senate may recommend the Council to exercise their power of expelling a student.

REGULATIONS CONCERNING ATTENDANCE AND CONDUCT.

1. Students are required to attend lectures with perfect regularity. A daily record is kept of the attendance of students in the lecture rooms. All absences will be reported to the Principal, who will, at his discretion, cause the same to be notified to the parent or guardian of the defaulting student. Students desiring leave of absence must make a written application to the Principal on a form which may be obtained from the porter.

In case of sickness or other unavoidable cause of nonattendance at the College, it is expected that a written notice will be sent as soon as possible by the parent, guardian, or medical attendant, to the Registrar, who shall report the same to the Principal.

2. Students are required to provide themselves with the Text-books used in the several classes which they attend, These may be obtained from the College Bookseller, Mr. J. E. Cornish, 33, Piccadilly, or they may be ordered through any other bookseller.

3. Periodical examinations are held in each class. Students who fail to attend these examinations without good reason assigned, or who habitually neglect the written exercises given out, are not entitled to compete for prizes and honours at the end of the session.

4. At the end of the session a General Examination of all the students is held, on the results of which prizes are awarded. Examination lists, showing the position obtained by each student, are subsequently posted in the College, and printed copies thereof sent to the parents or guardians of the students. Students absenting themselves from this examination are not entitled to a certificate of attendance on the class.

5. Each Professor, Teacher, or other Officer of the College will consider it his duty to report to the Principal any breach of discipline, or any instance of disorderly conduct on the part of any of the students, which may come under his personal observation. Habitual neglect of work in any class, without good reason assigned, will be regarded as a breach of discipline, and may subject a student to suspension from the class. Smoking in any part of the College or its precincts is forbidden.

6. Each student is expected to provide himself with a College Calendar, in order that he may make himself familiar with the rules of the College, with the Class arrangements, and with the regulations affecting the several Scholarships and Exhibitions founded in connexion with the College.

LIBRARY REGULATIONS.

1. The use of the Library for the reading and borrowing of books is open to all Day Students of the College heretofore admitted; and as to all hereafter to be admitted on payment of the Library fee of 5s., to be paid on admission, during the following hours:-Daily, from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., except on Saturdays, when the Library will be open from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

2. The use of the Library for the reading of books is open to all Evening Students of the College who shall have paid the Library fee of 2s. 6d., on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 6.30 to 9 p.m., until the termination of the Regular Evening Courses; and on Monday and Wednesday from 6.30 to 9 p.m. during the continuance of Supplementary Evening Courses (if any).

3. Admittance to the Library and use of its books is in the case of all persons conditional upon the strict observance of its Rules, neglect of which may at any time, at the discretion of the Principal, cause the withdrawal of the right of entering or using the Library.

4. The Library is closed to readers during the College Vacations, and on incidental College holidays. During Vacations the Library may be consulted by persons qualified under Rule 11, and books may be taken out by them and by students holding Vacation orders (to be obtained from the Principal on personal application) between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. A fortnight will be allowed for the retention of books thus taken out. The Library is closed to readers and borrowers from the commencement of the Christmas Vacation to the day after Christmas Day; from the commencement of the Easter Vacation to the Tuesday after Easter Sunday; and during the month of August. Books may be retained during these periods only by persons qualified under Rule 11, and by students who have on personal application obtained orders to that

effect from the Principal. The Library is altogether closed from the 23rd to the 30th September for the annual stock taking; and all books whatever, and by whomsoever borrowed, must be returned to the Librarian on or before the 22nd September (or the 21st, if the 22nd be a Sunday), by 12 o'clock at noon.

5. All applications for books to be read in the Library (except those specified under Rule 8), or to be taken out of the College, must be made to the Librarian, on the printed forms severally provided for the purpose. Books read in the Reading-room must not be left on the tables, but returned to the Librarian.

6. No Library books are under any circumstances to be taken into the class rooms.

7. Books taken out of the College are to be returned at the end of one week, but may be taken out again for a further period of the same length, if no other application has been made for them to the Librarian in the meantime. Not more than three volumes may be taken out at one time. Books may be bespoken, but will not be reserved by the Librarian unless claimed within two days after they have been returned.

8. The works of reference and periodicals placed in the Reading-room may be consulted there by students, but not taken out of the Library. Periodicals may be taken out by persons qualified under Rule 11. Works of reference are at once to be returned to their place on the shelves after use.

9. Books marked in the Catalogue are not to be taken out under any circumstances, except after a written order has been obtained from the Principal.

10. Books enumerated in the List of Class Reference Books posted in the Library at the beginning of each Session, and books marked † in the Catalogue can only be taken out for a single night after 4 p.m., or from 12 at noon on Saturday to 10 a.m. on Monday.

11. The privilege of consulting books in the inner Library is reserved to Professors, Lecturers, Associates who shall have claimed a Library ticket by application to the Principal, and Students who may (after special reason assigned) have obtained an order for the purpose from the
