NEW EDITION.

CHAMBERS'S CYCLOPÆDIA

OF

ENGLISH LITERATURE.

EDITED BY ROBERT CHAMBERS, LL.D.,

THIRD EDITION, REVISED BY ROBERT CARRUTHERS, LL.D.

To be completed in two Handsome Volumes, Royal 8vo., Price 20s,

EMBELLISHED BY WOOD ENGRAVINGS.

THIS Work, the first of its kind in Great Britain, was originally published in 1843, and was received with great favour by the public. It was designed and commenced by the late Dr. Robert Chambers-always zealous and indefatigable, as he was successful, in the promotion of literature and public improvement. After an interval of fifteen years, a second edition was issued with as much acceptance as the first; and now a Third and carefully-revised Edition is offered to the public, continuing the extracts and biographical notices to the present time. These comprise the most exquisite productions of English intellect, from Anglo-Saxon to the present times, in the various departments headed by Chaucer, Shakspeare, Milton-by Moore, Bacon, Locke-by Hooker, Taylor, Barrow-by Addison, Johnson, Goldsmith-by Hume, Robertson, Gibbon, and others, down to the present day-set in a biographical and critical history of the Literature itself. The work may fitly be termed an Introduction to the Pantheon of English Writers.

ON MARCH 1 WAS PUBLISHED

ditto half-calf...

Ditto £6 6s. Od. Work contains 27,000 distinct Articles, 3,400 Wood Engravings, 30 coloured Maps, and Index to 17,000 incidentally-mentioned subjects. In this REVISED EDITION of Chambers's Encyclopaedia the whole of the articles have undergone thorough revision, and have been brought up to the present date, many of them having been entirely re-written. The re-issue is thus virtually a NEW EDITION, and represents the actual state of things. The revision has been effected under the careful superintendence of ANDREW FIND LATER, LL.D., who has throughout taken charge of the work, and imparted to it that practically useful and reliable character which has rendered it so universally acceptable.

HERMANN'S PHYSIOLOGY.

Demy 8vo., price 16s.

Elements of Human Physiology. By Dr. L. HERMANN, Professor of Physiology in the University of Zurich. Translated from the Fifth German Edition, with the Author's permission, by ARTHUR GAMGEE, M.D., F.R.S., Brackenbury Professor of Physiology in Owens College, Manchester; and Examiner in Physiology to the University of Edinburgh.

"For a considerable time a first-class work on the Elements of Physiology in our own language has been a desideratum. Dr. Gamgee steps forward to fill the gap with a carefully conducted and excellent translation of Prof. Hermann's deservedly-esteemed "Elements of Physiology," a work unequalled in the care which has been bestowed on the collecting and the balancing of the investigations of authors from all quarters, as well as in its general construction and inherent unity of design. There is no doubt that the appearance of this work has greatly reduced the need for any other treatise on the Elements of Physiology."NATURE.

Memoir of Norman Macleod, D.D. By his Brother, the Rev. DONALD MACLEOD, one of Her Majerty's Chaplains. With Portraits and numerous Illustrations. Tenth Thousand. 2 vols., demy 8vo, 26s.

"We once more commend to our readers a work which is a fitting monument, erected with the true self-forgetfulness of a loving brother and a faithful biographer, and which will leave the abiding impression that in Norman Macleod all who knew him mourn a devoted, gallant, and delightful friend, and his Church and country lost a magnificent champion of the good, the noble, and the true."-Times.

"The biographer's delicate duty has been performed with tact and good taste, and it is rare that one writing so soon after his hero's death is able to give so much completeness to his portrait."-Daily News.

"An admirable piece of work; it will become a classic in Scotch literature, and we would fain hope that, if its English readers are less lavish of their enthusiasm, they may not be inferior in number to the Northern admirers."-Hour.

"Mr. Donald Macleod has done his work in compiling this memoir of his justly celebrated brother with care and good taste. The introductory chapters give an interesting glimpse of a state of life and manners that is now well nigh forgotten."Pall Mall Gazette.

"A memoir worthy of the subject. It may well do for Scotland what Dr. Stanley's Life of Arnold did for England."-Spectator.

"There is throughout these volumes a freedom from cant and sentimentality that is rare in the biography of a popular divine."-Athenæum.

"We are much mistaken if it does not take high rank among select biographies. It reveals a rich nature readily removed to fine issues. Humour, fun, waggish satire, sparkling fancy, pathetic touches, devout experiences, and fine insights go together; yet they never conflict-for the bond of a pure, self-denying nature runs through all. Mr. Donald Macleod has done his work well."-Nonconformist,

"The biographer has done his task well. He writes with a practised pen, and good sense and good taste pervade the volumes."-Scotsman.

"The favourable impression made by a first reading is deepened by each subsequent examination of the work."-North British Daily Mail.

Cities of Northern and Central Italy. By AUGUSTUS J. C. HARE, Author of "Walks in Rome," &c. With 130 Illustrations. 3 vols., crown 8vo, sold separately, 15s. each. Intended as a companion to all those parts of Italy which lie between the Alps and the districts described in "Days near Rome.'

"The author of 'Walks in Rome' has now given us a delightful commentary on the topography, the paintings, and the sculptures of Northern and Central Italy. A work which deserves to live, and will live."-Hour.

"This most delightful book."-Scotsman.

Geology, for Students and General Readers. By A. H. GREEN, M.A., Professor of Geology and Mining in the Yorkshire College of Science. Part I. The Elements of Physical Geology. With 140 Illustrations by the Author. Crown 8vo, 12s. 6d.

"We are bound to recommend this as one of the most comprehensive works that have recently appeared."-Athenæum.

Climate and Time in their Geological Relations. A Theory of Secular Changes of the Earth's Climate. By JAMES CROLL, F.R.S., LL.D., of H.M. Geological Survey. With Illustrations. Demy 8vo, 24s.

One of the most philosophical contributions to the science of Geology within the last half century. Every page is distinguished by close and earnest thought, and the conclusions arrived at are the result of striking powers of deductive analysis."-Athenæum. "Since Sir Charles Lyell sent forth his Principles of Geology,' we have not had a work that is likely to be so influential on the future of the science as this."-British Quarterly Review.

The Great Ice Age, and its Relation to the Antiquity of Man. By JAMES GEIKIE, F.R.S., of H.M. Geological Survey. With Maps, Charts, and numerous Illustrations. New Edition in preparation.

Review.

"This book will mark an epoch in the scientific study of the Ice Age."-Saturday "We have indicated but imperfectly the philosophical spirit which marks every step of the inquiry, and we strongly recommend the volume to all."-Athenæum.
