PON perufing the following FRAGMENT, fince it came from the prefs, the Editor has remarked some improprieties in the language, of which the more grofs and palpable may justly be imputed to his own negligence: and fhould our Chinese be chargeable himself with the reft (and not fome tranflator), it may be fuggefted in his behalf, that he was probably a man who paid more attention to things than words, and who, perhaps, had not acquired a very accurate knowledge of the English tongue. And, therefore, if his obfervations fhould, in the main, be found just and important, and expreffed with fome degree of perfpicuity and force, the candid reader, it is prefumed, will reft fatisfied; without further requiring a claffical purity of diction, |
