BOOK IV.

THUS, for one thousand years, MESSIAH reign'd,
And all was peace--for Satan fast was chain'd:-
Hence happiness most pure by all was known,
'Twas in the cottage found, ev'n on the throne,
Where erst, perhaps, but few would dare essay
T'expect that peace of mind would bend her way,
Take up her seat beneath the glittering crown,
And stifle discord with her holy frown :-
Give to the sovereign bliss to banish care,
And from his heart dislodging fell despair :-
Say who can know, save him a crown adorns,
What sleepless nights it brings, what anxious morns;
But ill repaid by pageantry and state,

Or all the worship of the rich and great.
But now the Almighty bids and Satan's chain

Unloos'd once more he freedom doth regain,—

And, to his nature true, in various guise,

Incites to vice, and stimulates with lies.
Variety he paints as sure to prove

More sweet than joys that spring from mutual love.
Hence for unwanted wealth desires arise,

And pow'r and rank are thought a noble prize:—
Though each unmerited, yet still we find

The lures effective to the fickle mind.
Envy and false ambition in each heart
Finds place is thence unwilling to depart:-
Whilst solid bliss, and sweet contentment fly
To sunny, happy realms beyond the sky.

Thus, in suggestions, Satan spreads his fraud,
'Mongst many nations who his cheats applaud;-
Ev'n in those nations where Messiah's sway
Is felt, are some who fall to him a prey,
His base devices ready to believe ;-
Though fraught with lies, and coin'd but to deceive;
But farther off he hastes to levy war,

And yokes the dragons to his iron car :—
Expands his standard to the wondering world,
Broad as the meteor's blaze when once unfurl'd.
Once more, what human powers can-to try
'Gainst God's annointed-Heaven's own Majesty.
