GRAMMAR-SCHOOL

TEXTS.

With Vocabularies. Edited by JOHN T. WHITE,
D.D. Oxon.

FOR Some time past it has been widely felt that a reduction in the cost of Classical Works used in schools generally, and more especially in those intended for boys of the middle classes, was at once desirable and not difficult of accomplishment. For the most part only portions of authors, it has been urged, are read in the earliest stages of education, and a pupil is usually taken from one work to another at the end of each successive half-year or term; so that, it has been added, a book needlessly large and proportionally expensive is laid aside after a short and but partial use for one of a more advanced nature and perhaps of still higher price. And that there is truth in these remarks, which are heard on all sides, it cannot but be conceded.

Under the title of Grammar-School Texts, therefore, it has been determined to issue in separate Parts such portions of classical writers as are more generally read in schools. Each Part will contain a Vocabulary of the words found in the Text it embraces, written on the plan adopted in WHITE's editions of EUTROPIUS, PHÆDRUS, CORNELIUS NEPOS, &c.

It is not intended to furnish the 'Grammar-School Texts' with Notes. Still, such points of construction as may appear to require elucidation will be explained under the proper articles in the several Vocabularies; so that much essential and legitimate assistance will be supplied to pupils in places brought prominently under their notice.
