Mat. I thank thee, gentle Bertha, for thy good

ness;

If aught could sooth the anguish of my soul,
Or raise it from the horrors of despair

To hope and joy, 'twould be thy gen'rous friend ship:

But I am sunk so deep in misery,

That comfort cannot reach me.

Ber. Talk not thus,

My sweet Matilda; innocence, like thine,
Must be the care of all-directing heav'n.
