Then, with the shining hosts above,
In nobler strains I'll sing thy love.

[blocks in formation]

The Glory of God in his Works and in his Word. 1 THE heavens declare thy glory, Lord; In every star thy wisdom shines; But when our eyes behold thy word, We read thy name in fairer lines. 2 The rolling sun, the changing light,

[merged small][ocr errors]

And nights, and days, thy power confess;
But that blest volume thou hast writ
Reveals thy justice and thy grace.

3 Sun, moon, and stars convey thy praise
Around the earth, and never stand;
So, when thy truth began its race,
It touched and glanced on every land.
4 Nor shall thy spreading gospel rest

Till through the world thy truth has run,
Till Christ has all the nations blest
That see the light or feel the sun.
5 Great Sun of Righteousness, arise!
O, bless the world with heavenly light!
Thy gospel makes the simple wise;
Thy laws are pure, thy judgments right.
6 Thy noblest wonders here we view,

In souls renewed and sins forgiven;
Lord, cleanse my sins, my soul renew,
And make thy word my guide to heaven.

Praise the Lord.

DUBLIN COLL

1 PRAISE the Lord; ye heavens adore him; Praise him, angels, in the height,

Sun and moon, rejoice before him;
Praise him, all ye stars of light.

2 Praise the Lord, for he hath spoken;
Worlds his mighty voice obeyed;
Laws, which never can be broken,
For their guidance he hath made.
3 Praise the Lord, for he is glorious;
Never shall his promise fail;
God hath made his saints victorious;
Sin and death shall not prevail.
4 Praise the God of our salvation;
Hosts on high his power proclaim ;
Heaven and earth, and all creation,
Praise and magnify his name.

SACRED LYRICS.

Praise in the Courts of the Lord.
1 PRAISE ye Jehovah's name;
Praise through his courts proclaim;
Rise and adore ;

High o'er the heavens above
Sound his great acts of love,
While his rich grace we prove,
Vast as his power.

2 Now let the trumpet raise
Triumphant sounds of praise,
Wide as his fame ;
There let the harp be found;
Organs, with solemn sound,
Roll your deep notes around,
Filled with his name.

3 While his high praise ye sing,
Shake every sounding string:
Sweet the accord!

He vital breath bestows :
Let every breath that flows
His noblest fame disclose:
Praise ye the Lord.

[blocks in formation]

1 THE Lord Jehovah reigns;
His throne is built on high ;
The garments he assumes

Are light and majesty :

His glories shine

With bearns so bright

No mortal eye

Can bear the sight.

2 The thunders of his hand
Keep the wide world in awe,
His power and justice stand
To guard his holy law :

And where his love

Resolves to bless,

WATTS.

His truth confirms
And seals the grace.

3 And can this mighty King
Of glory condescend?
And will he write his name
My Father and my Friend?

Join all my powers

And praise the Lord.

I love his name,

I love his word :

The surpassing Glory of God.

ANONYMOUS.

1 SINCE o'er thy footstool here below
Such radiant gems are strown,

O, what magnificence must glow,
Great God, about thy throne!

So brilliant here these drops of light-
There the full ocean rolls how bright!

2 If night's blue curtain of the sky
With thousand stars inwrought,
Hung like a royal canopy

With glittering diamonds fraught—
Be, Lord, thy temple's outer veil,
What splendor at the shrine must dwell!

3 The dazzling sun at noonday hour-
Forth from his flaming vase
Flinging o'er earth the golden shower
Till vale and mountain blaze -

But shows, O Lord, one beam of thine:
What, then, the day where thou dost shine
4 O, how shall these dim eyes endure
That noon of living rays!

Or how our spirits, so impure,
Upon thy glory gaze!

Anoint, O Lord, anoint our sight,
And fit us for that world of light.

Power and Majesty of God.

WATTS

1 WITH reverence let the saints appear,
And bow before the Lord;

His high commands with reverence hear,
And tremble at his word.

2 How terrible thy glories be!

How bright thine armies shine!
Where is the power that vies with thee?
Or truth compared with thine ?
3 The northern pole, and southern, rest
On thy supporting hand;
Darkness and day from east to west
Move round at thy command.

4 Thy words the raging winds control,
And rule the boisterous deep;
Thou mak'st the sleeping billows roll,
The rolling billows sleep.

5 Justice and judgment are thy throne,
Yet wondrous is thy grace;

While truth and mercy, joined in one,
Invite us near thy face.

Exhortation to Praise.

1 YE tribes of Adam, join

WATTS.

With heaven, and earth, and seas,
And offer notes divine

To your Creator's praise;

Ye holy throng

Of angels bright,

In worlds of light

Begin the song.

2 The shining worlds above
In glorious order stand,
Or in swift courses move,
By his

supreme command:

He spake the word,

And all their frame

From nothing came

To praise the Lord

3 Let all the nations fear

The God that rules above;

He brings his people near,

And makes them taste his love;

[blocks in formation]

1 NATURE, with all her powers, shall sing
Her great Creator and her King;

Nor air, nor earth, nor skies, nor seas,
Deny the tribute of their praise.

2 Ye seraphs, who sit near his throne,
Begin to make his glories known ;
Tune high your harps, and spread the sound
Throughout creation's utmost bound.

3 O, may our ardent zeal employ

Our loftiest thoughts and loudest songs;
Let there be sung, with warmest joy,
Hosanna from ten thousand tongues.
