"Few living classical scholars have done so much, or nearly so much, as Mr. Fowle to smooth the way of the classical scholar by a series of elementary works which for accuracy in detail and perfection of method, as well as practical utility, are, as a whole, unsurpassed by any similar works in this country. Their tone is scholarly and

thorough, and no real difficulty is shirked."-School Board Chronicle.

"It has seldom been our fortune to light upon a Greek grammar in which economy and retrenchment of space went so thoroughly along with lucidity and solidity of information. . . . A vast amount of thought and pains has been bestowed upon such arrangements of declensions, divisions of a declension, tenses, and tables of verbs, as obviate wearisome repetition and establish a sequence appreciable by the learner."— Saturday Review.

(a)

Comment on the relapse of the people into idolatry during the absence of Moses. With what loss were they threatened in consequence? How did Aaron escape destruction? When did Moses use the very infirmities of the people as a plea for Divine favour? What necessitated the removal of the Tabernacle from the Camp? Show that even minute ceremonial arrangements were directed by God Himself; and that the appointed details of Aaron's vestments were typical of the eternal priesthood and mediation of Christ. Comment on the selection of the tribe of Levi for the service of the Tabernacle, and of the family of Aaron for the priesthood. Explain "Tables of Testimony," "Blot me out of Thy book."

(b)

Tabulate the events of Holy Week as narrated by St. Matthew. When did Christ's anointing by Mary probably occur? Account for the permitted desecration of a part of the Temple. Comment on the manner in which Christ confuted and silenced the three leading parties who opposed His teaching during this period. Name circumstances of the Last Supper which differed from the ordinary Paschal Feasts. Explain" The multitudes that went before and that followed."

(c)

Which of St. Paul's Epistles were probably written from Rome during his first imprisonment there, A.D. 61-63? What date would you be disposed to name for the publication of the Acts, and wherefore? Give brief reasons for inferring that, after undergoing two years' military imprisonment, the Apostle's case was heard by Nero, after which he departed from Rome, and eventually accomplished another missionary journey.

Who were selected to behold the Divine vision on Sinai ? On what grounds did Moses plead for the pardon of the idolaters? Explain his prayer for individual guidance, and comment on the answer he received. How was the rich furniture, etc., procured for the Tabernacle? In what way was the Divine approval of the whole ceremonial expressed? (See also Junior Paper).

(b)

Account for Christ's refusal to drink of the cup at the Last Supper. Show that His betrayal, arrest, and trial were secretly and hurriedly arranged. Account for His double trial. What do you know of Pontius Pilate? Why is his condemnation of Christ pointedly mentioned? Contrast the repentance of Peter with that of Judas. (See also Junior Paper).

(c)

Name some portions of the Acts which seem to have been filled in by another hand than that of St. Luke. To whom would you attribute them, and wherefore? Of what may they be regarded as indications? (See also Junior Paper).

Give instances from Scripture implying the personality of the Holy Ghost; also that in the kingdom of Christ all things are done by the power of the Holy Spirit, and that He joins with the Father and the Son in the work of our salvation. What is included in His sanctification of the elect? Derive the term Church. What meaning is attached to it in the Creed? what does its unity consist? What is its work? Discuss the practical effect of a belief in the "Communion of Saints." How has our reconciliation with the Almighty justice of God been wrought? Show by analogy that the resurrection of the body is neither impossible nor improbable.

Argue, after Paley's manner, and by reference to Acts and Galatians, that St. Paul suffered for preaching Christianity as distinct from Judaism; also that he regarded the Jewish law as superseded.
