1. Give the names and the original homes of the German tribes who invaded Britain. Describe briefly the gradual conquest of Britain by the English. Compare this with other Teutonic

conquests, as that of Gaul by the Franks.

2. Trace the history of the Danish power in England.

3. Estimate the effect of the introduction of Christianity, and especially of the Roman Church organization, on the development of English national unity.

4. Explain carefully the constitution and powers of the Witanagemot.

5. Describe the policy of Dunstan. Compare it (i) with that of Ethelred the Unready, (ii) with that of Canute. What do you think of it as regards (i) popularity, (ii) wisdom, (iii) success?

6. Explain very briefly the position of the following ranks of society :-Slaves, theyns, ealdormen, king, æthelings.

THE REIGN OF HENRY VII.

1. What were the grounds of Henry VII.'s title to the throne? Show how the insecurity of his position determined the policy of his reign.

2. Give a brief account of the attempts made by the Yorkist party to overthrow the Tudor Government during the reign of Henry VII. Compare the positions of that party at the beginning and the end of the reign.

3. Explain the origin and constitution of the court of the Star Chamber. Give a brief history of it, with special reference to its position under the Tudors.

4. Describe briefly the state of affairs in Ireland which led to Poyning's Law. What were the chief provisions of this Act?

5. Account for the servility of Parliament to the Crown during the Tudor period.
