The Concise Dictionary of Foreign QuotationsThis dictionary contains quotations in Latin, French, German, Italian and Spanish. The entries were chosen by five editors, each widely read in the language concerned. The majority of the entries will probably be familiar to an English reader, and a few were chosen because, although unfamiliar, the editorial team thought them delightful. The sayings are accompanied by their translation into English and cross-indexed for easy reference. The range includes literary quotations, political quotations, poetic thoughts, pungent comments, polished epigrams and shrewd perceptions, by everyone from Cicero to Sartre, Goethe to Goering. |

If I had to think of the stupidest way to organize a book of quotations, I think I would do it by listing the citations alphabetically based on the first word quoted. How nice of Anthony Lejeune to show us all what such a book of quotations would look like. The quality of the translations is also very uneven.
