M. C. d. d. zod., arc 35°25', reparation for the Chesapeake affair in the fall of 1811; at the same time a recrudescence of our Indian troubles, followed by misunderstandings which developed into a second war with Great Britain.

O conv. zod., arc 37°34', January, 1814; M. C. 6 D d. d. zod., arc 38°26', November, 1814. This year witnessed many national perplexities, hard fighting on land and sea, culminating in the investiture of Washington by the British and the burning of the capitol.

M. C. mundo direct, arc 86°15', or September, 1862. The approach of the meridional point to the body of this malefic coincides with the progress of the Civil War, the repeated reverses of the Union forces, the arc reaching completion when everything seemed darkest for the nation, and just preceding the victory at Antietam, which was the keynote for the preliminary proclamation, and the turning-point of the rebellion.

Oh d. d. zod., arc 88°24', does not quite measure to the assassination of Lincoln, though it agrees quite correctly with a seeming recovery on the part of the nation's malcontents, the last sad scenes in the war drama, before ringing down the curtain on which a martyred hero constituted a fitting apotheosis.

Some interesting facts may be observed in the foregoing table. Both assassinations occurred under a combined influence of O with the passed through our 7th and 8th Houses during our two greatest wars; the lunar oppositions at the cholera epidemic in 1832 from common signs and the 6th and 12th Houses, are also significant. This condition was coincident with Jupiter's approach to the Sun, and was no doubt much intensified thereby, as the perihelia of the planets are invariably accompanied by a vitiation of the atmosphere and a diminution in the solar energy.

In these few generalizations, so seemingly consonant with fact and science, we believe we have approached a step nearer

a reasonable and authentic nativity than has heretofore been reached; and though a few minutes' error may exist in our base of calculation, we submit that such need not necessarily invalidate the proximal value of the results thus obtained. HAZELRIGG.

A CHINESE PROPHECY.

66

In the Westminster Review for August, 1899, Lieutenant-Colonel Macgregor describes the failure of an attempted visit to the Temple of Heaven in Pekin, the most holy shrine in all China:— “ Afterwards we found that the Temple of Heaven had been destroyed by fire, said to be lightning from heaven, a very short time before our visit. This was the year the present young Emperor ascended the throne. The year which was then drawing to a close was also noted for great famine in China, and for extensive floods that had inundated a great portion of the country, leading to much loss of life and property. And the superstitious Chinese soothsayers declared that these misfortunes combined with the destruction of their holy temple by fire from heaven, were events of evil augury to the country and the partial fulfilment of the old Chinese prophecy that ran something like this:

"When an old hag governs, and a young man reigns,
When dearth and a deluge distress the land,

And the Temple of Heaven no more remains,
Then watch for the sword which is close at hand.

"It will be observed that the prophet does not predict in so many words the entire destruction of this ancient empire, but rather a time of trouble and distress from which the country may rise with renewed health and energy."

THE Kabalistic horoscope which we present this month to the readers of THE SPHINX is that of Lieut. R. P. Hobson.

Here we find a marked personality. The sum of the horoscope is XIX which points to honors and a widespread reputation. In the 10th House we find Jupiter IX- this is beneficial in a marked degree, and will give him power to scale heights and soar above many of his contemporaries. Responsible positions are shown, and favors from high officials. As Jupiter rules 2d House, fortune comes through the profession. There is a ray to 10th from Jupiter in Virgo. This points to honor and benefits, and the ray falling in Leo points to a position under the government, and it shows that he is loyal to that government. There

is also a ray to 10th from Mercury in Pisces in 5th; this is extremely good and it is certain that he is in his right vocation, for he takes pleasure in his work. In the 11th we find Jupiter and the Moon; from Jupiter he may count upon receiving benefits from friends, and their help will give an impetus to his affairs, which will tend towards raising the status of the native. The friends as denoted by the Moon are persons whose ideas are original, and whose intuitional powers will help them to strike out novelties.

The ray from

So far the bright side; now for the reverse. DXII from 12th to 11th is evil; he will lose some of his friends owing to secret enemies, whose machinations will bring about their deaths; this will be baneful to his friends, and the path in life of the native seems peculiarly to favor this influence. In the 12th House we find DXII, ♂ and . Dangers are here shown, and under evil revolutions, adversaries (warlike) will come to the front, and as Moon unites a ray from Pisces in 5th House to DXII, dangers are certain on the watery element. Let him not be caught unprepared, even when on a cruise of pleasure, for the influence may show itself where least expected.

will not overcome the influence which emanates from the XIIth arcanum on major point. In the 1st House we find XI. Here we see the will and power to surmount difficulties Suo Marte, not one prone to letting others commence operations, but one to inaugurate them, and stick to his guns through
