The most famous of all hieroglyphics were those presented at the commencement of this article. The first had reference to the great fire of London in 1666, and was published many years before the events, together with a prophecy by William Lilly, the astrologer.

The celebrated Nostradamus, when he forsook his profession of physician for that of almanac maker, appears to have been content to conceal his prophetic utterances in verse.

Most of his prophecies had reference to France, the land of his birth, but the following referred to our own country:

"Le lyon jeune le vieux surmontera

En champ bellique par singulier duelle;
Dans cage d'or les yeux lui crevera,
Deux classes une, puis mourir, mort cruelle."

Translation:

The young lion shall overcome the old,
On the field of war in single combat (duel).
He will pierce his eyes in a cage of gold.

This is the first of two loppings, then he dies a cruel death.

This is said to have reference to the death of Henry II., July 10, 1559, who was killed in a duel with the captain of his Scotch guards, Comte de Montgomery, who, although he begged to be excused, was compelled to oppose the king. The Scotchman spurring his horse struck the king upon the throat below the visor. The lance shivered, and as the butt raised the visor, a splinter wounded the king above the right eye, cutting several of the veins; the king fainted, but lived on for ten days in terrible agony, as foretold: "Deux classes une, puis mourir, mort cruelle."

This was the first of two blows; the king died as predicted. His son, Henry III., was the second; he fell by the hand of Jacques Clément.

ALAN LEO.

"THERE are those to whom a sense of religion has come in storm and tempest; and there are those whom it has summoned amid scenes of revelry and idle vanity; there are those who have heard its still small voice' amid rural leisure and placid contentment. But perhaps the knowledge which cometh not to err is most frequently impressed upon the mind during seasons. of affliction; and tears are the softening showers which cause the seed of heaven to spring and take root in the human heart."

SIR WALTER SCOTT.

THE subject I have selected for this kabalistic horoscope is the Hon. Chauncey Mitchell Depew. In the tenth house we find, and also throws a ray to tenth from fifth house; added to this, h xv is in the eighth, throwing a fatal ray to tenth; this is very harmful. It is certain that the wife and offspring (if any) have suffered; there has probably been losses of money on the wife's side, and this, owing to a "fate." 1879, 1884, and 1893, are years which are found by calculation to be evil, but the ray from R * S protects the native personally and points to honor and success. In the eleventh house we find ☀, powerful friends, but is here also, a certain amount of jealousy from certain friends, happily 2 is twice placed in eleventh in his own sign; this points to a fact, that if a man is best known by the class of friends he associates with, the native must be a true "man." In the twelfth we find and the twelfth house receives a ray from ♂ in eleventh and a ray from in the same house; throwing a ray to his own sign cannot harm the native much, and strengthens the twelfth by his ray. points to men who work in secret, but whose aims. are not unfriendly in the strict sense of the term; they study the undercurrents, and glory at times in checkmating the native; not much to fear from this quarter. In the first we find the Reaper XLIII and throws a ray from eighth house; there have been some reverses in the career of the native, and there is a danger of the unexpected turning up any time, a "fate" influence which sets troubles in operation and these, at times, are difficult to cope with; fortunatelp , who rules eighth house, is strong and throws a ray to first house; this is very protective. In the second house we find, and the second house receives no evil ray; financial matters should be generally satisfactory. In the third house we find VIII; this is rather unfortunate, but throws a friendly ray from and, to a certain extent, neutralizes VIII; this latter alone would have pointed to bickering and legal bothers. The native has probably had such, but in the majority of cases has come out the winner. In the fourth we find the RS, h, and ; celebrity is most marked here, and seeing that the ray from
