1. Give in outline the history of the attempts made by the Danes to conquer England during the Anglo-Saxon period.

2. How did William the Conqueror try to control the barons in England?

3. Sketch the career of Simon de Montfort.

4. Write notes in explanation of (a) the Feudal Army; (b) Battle of Agincourt; (c) Piers the Plowman; (d) Court of Star Chamber.

GEOGRAPHY.

Time: two hours.

1. Describe three of the great inland basins of the world, their extent, drainage, and physical features.

2. Under what circumstances did Great Britain acquire the following possessions, viz., Cape Colony, India, Australia.

3. What races of people occupy Japan? Describe the government of the country and the principal occupations of the people.

4. Draw a map of Canada, showing the physical features and principal towns.

5. Mention the main ocean trade routes between Australia and Europe, and compare their respective advantages.

6. Summarize briefly the more important physical features of the New Zealand Archipelago.

7. State briefly the nature of the chief weather-governing disturbances affecting Southern Australia.

8. Draw a full page map of Australia, showing State boundaries, mountain systems, and main drainage basins.

GREEK.

1. Translate into Greek:

a. Stop throwing stones!

b. The sailors killed many large fish.

c. Finally they shut the gates of the city.

d. He said that he was the son of the Persian king.

e. Your father is dying of hunger in Athens.

f. We must love in order to be loved.

g. Don't give the water to these dogs!

h. If I had known that you were here I should not have gone to the ship.

i. We are afraid that you cannot hear that old woman speaking.

j. During the winter all the mountains were covered with snow for six days and nights.

2. Translate into English:

α. Κράτιστον οὖν ἡμῖν ἐστὶν ὡς τάχιστα βοηθεῖν τοῖσδε τοῖς ἀνδράσιν.

i. Give the positive of the adjective for which KрάTIσTOV is used as the superlative, and give the positive and comparative of the adverb from which Táxiσra comes.

ii. Give the vocative singular and genitive plural οἱ ἀνδράσιν.

iii. Give the neuter genitive singular and accusative plural of τοῖσδε.

b. ̓Αρίστιππος ὁ Θετταλὸς ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸν Κῦρον καὶ αἰτεῖ αὐτὸν δισχιλίους ξένους καὶ τριῶν μηνῶν μισθόν.

i. What other cases are governed by pòs? What cases by κarà ? Give the meanings in each

instance.

ii. Give the Greek for 70, 80th, 9 times, 10,000

cows, 3 baskets of eggs.

c. Νομίζω ἔγωγε, εἰ ἐκεῖνοι ἀπολοῦνται, οὐδ ̓ ἡμῖν εἶναι οὐδε μίαν σωτηρίαν, οὕτω μὲν πολλῶν ὄντων πολεμίων οὕτω δὲ τεθαῤῥηκότων.

i. Parse ἀπολοῦνται and τεθαῤῥηκότων.

ii. Give the dative singular masculine of οὐδεμίαν.

iii. Give the genitive feminine singular of πολλῶν.

α. Μέχρι δ ̓ ἂν ἐγὼ ἤκω, αἱ σπονδαὶ μενόντων.

i. Parse ἥκω.

ii. Parse μενόντων, giving 2nd person singular indicative active of the present, future, aorist, and perfect tenses.

ε. Ἡμεῖς βουλόμεθα διασωθῆναι πρὸς τὴν Ἑλλάδα πεζῇ· πλοῖα γὰρ οὐκ ἔχομεν.

i. Parse διασωθῆναι.

ii. Give the 2nd person singular future optative of βουλόμεθα.

†. Ἐκ τούτου μοι δίδωσι τους ἄνδρας καὶ τοὺς ἵππους, οὓς ὑμεῖς ὄψεσθε, ἐπειδὰν ἡμέρα γένηται.

i. Parse ὄψεσθε, and give the 3rd person plural indicative of the present, aorist, and perfect forms used to express the idea of this verb.

ii. Parse δίδωσι and γένηται.

4. Τὰ δ ̓ ἀλλ ̓ ἔασον ταῦτα καὶ πιθοῦ λόγοις

ἐμοῖσιν.

i. Scan the 1st line.

ii. Parse ἔασον and πιθοῦ.

iii. Give the nominative feminine plural of ταῦτα.

h. γυναῖκα τήνδε μοι σῶσον λαβών, ἕως ἂν ἵππους δεῦρο Θρηκίας ἄγων

ἔλθω.

i. Give the vocative singular of γυναῖκα.

ii. Parse ἔλθω and account for its mood.

iii. Give the 2nd person singular imperative of the

aorist 2nd of λαβών.

LATIN.

Time: two hours.

1. Translate into Latin:

a. The forces of the king came to the sea.

b. The young man was unable to run.

c. The children all carried their books.

d. I fear the poor man will die within a few days.

e. The leader of the cavalry said, "I refuse to advance."

f. When the war was finished the soldiers received much praise but little money.

g. He was the son of honest parents and lived many years in this city to which he came when a boy.

h. If he had been a brave man, he would not have fled. i. Labienus ordered the sailors to seek a safe port.

2. Translate into English:

a. Legem breuem esse oportet.

b. Ter tecum conata loqui ter inutilis haesit
Lingua, ter in primo destitit ore sonus.

c. Errare eos dicunt, si quicquam ab his praesidii sperent,
qui suis rebus diffidant.

d. Ego autem ne irasci possum quidem iis quos amo.

3. Give the gender, genitive singular, and meaning of calear. foedus, aestas, quercus, cardo.

4. What is the Latin for three a piece, nine times, seventy, two hundred women, two thousand men ?

5. Give the meaning and principal parts of the following verbs, and mark the quantity of the last vowel but one of the infinitives: cado, soleo, augeo, sepelio, adipiscor.

6. Give the third person singular of the future simple indicative active and the second person plural of the imperfect subjunctive active of the following verbs: quaero, spero, ueto, ardeo, uideo.

7. What is the "Sequence of Tenses"? Illustrate your answer by constructing short sentences, in Latin, as examples.

FRENCH.

Time: two hours.

1. a. Write in the feminine: époux, lui-même, mon cher bienfaiteur, le vieux paysan, l'héros favori.

b. Write in the plural: bal, bijou, cet ordre impérial, de laquelle.

2. Give the present and past participles of remplir, craindre, pouvoir; present indicative of manger, dormir, aller; first person singular preterite indicative of mettre, recevoir, faire; third person singular future indicative of savoir; first person plural imperative of avancer; third person singular present subjunctive of jeter.

3. Form adverbs from the following adjectives: doux, ardent, Lent, confus, complet.

Write in French: 1821; a fortnight ago; three times a day; Francis I; Henry VIII.

4. Translate into French:

a. Who has given you this watch? Do not offer it to him.
b. Whom do you prefer? What does he prefer?
c. The pen with which I am writing. The author whose

works you have read.

d. He had never seen a lion. There is no more butter.
