New-Year's Day.

WHILE, with ceaseless course, the Sun
Hafted thro' the former year,

WHIL

Many fouls their race have run ;

Never more to meet us here:

Fix'd in an eternal state,

They have done with all below;

We a little longer wait

But how little, none can know.
As the winged arrow flies
Speedily the mark to find;
As the lightning from the skies
Darts, and leaves no trace behind;
Swiftly thus our fleeting days
Bear us down life's rapid ftream:
Lord, our expectations raise-

All below is but a dream.

Thanks for mercies paft receive;
Former kindneffes renew:
From this moment may we live
With eternity in view:

Bless the word to young and old:
Shed abroad a Savior's love;
And, when life's fhort tale is told,
May we dwell with thee above.

TERNAL God, we blefs thy name :

The fame thy pow'r, thy grace the fame :

The tokens of thy friendly care

Open, and crown, and close the year.
We 'midft ten thousand dangers ftand,
Supported by thy guardian hand;
And fee, when we furvey thy ways,
Ten thousand monuments of praise.
Thus far thy arm has led us on;
Thus far we make thy mercy known;

TERNAL Spirit, heav'nly Dove,

Een there baptifmal waters move;

WEETEST notes let faints employ,
In the worship of the Lord;

Sing his praise with facred joy,
While
ye

fit around his board.

Did the King of glory think

On rebellious worms below? Snatch us from hell's horrid brink, And let fallen angels go?

Did he take a human form?

Did he vifit Adam's race?
Was the great Creator born?
Boundless love! Surprising grace!

Did he do his Father's will?
(And for this the Savior came)

Did he Sinai's law fulfil?
Blefs O blefs Immanuel's name.

Did he bear fin's dreadful weight,
On high Calv'ry's bloody tree?
Never was there love fo great!
Never was there grace fo free!

exalted Lord,

ToJefus, our ex leav'n and earth ador'd!)

Fain would our hearts and voices raise
A cheerful fong of facred praise.

But all the notes which mortals know
Are weak, and languishing, and low;
Far, far above our humble fongs,
The theme demands immortal tongues.

Yet while around his board we meet,
And humbly worship at his feet;
O let our warm affections move
In glad returns of grateful love!

Let faith our feeble senses aid,
To fee thy wond'rous love display'd,
Thy broken flesh, thy bleeding veins,
Thy dreadful agonizing pains.

Let humble penitential woe,
With painful, pleafing anguish flow;
And thy forgiving fmiles impart
Life, hope, and joy to ev'ry heart.

TOW condefcending, and how kind

How

Was God's eternal Son!
Our mis'ry reach'd his heav'nly mind,
And pity brought him down.

When justice, by our fins provok'd,
Drew forth its awful fword,
gave his foul up to the stroke
Without a murm'ring word.

He

He sunk beneath our heavy woes,
To raise us to his throne:
There's not a gift his hand bestows
But coft his heart a groan.

This was compaffion like a God,
That when the Savior knew
The price of pardon was his blood,
His pity ne'er withdrew.

Here we receive repeated feals

Of Jefus dying love :
Hard is the heart that never feels
One loft affection move!

Here let our fouls begin to melt,

While we his death record;
And, with our joy for pardon'd guilt,
Mourn that we pierc'd the Lord.
