But when his voice fhall raise the dead,
And bid the world draw near,
How will the guilty nations dread.
To fee their Judge appear!

The Incarnation of Chrift.

MORT

TORTALS, awake, with angels join,
And chant the pleafing lay;

Joy, love and gratitude combine
To hail th' aufpicious day.

In heav'n the rapt'rous fong began,
And sweet seraphic fire

Thro' all the thining legions ran,

And ftrung and tun'd the lyre.

Swift thro' the vaft expanse it flew,
And loud the echo roll'd;

The theme, the song, the joy was new,
"Twas more than heav'n could hold.

Down thro' the portals of the sky,

Th' impetuous torrent ran;
And angels flew with eager joy,
To bear the news to man.
Hark! the cherubic armies fhout,
And glory leads the fong:
Good-will and peace are heard throughout
Th' harmonious heav'nly throng.

With joy the chorus we'll repeat
Glory to God on high;

Good-will and peace are now complete,
Jefus, was born to die.

Hail, Prince of Life, for ever hail!
Redeemer, Brother, Friend!

Tho' earth, and time, and life should fail,
Thy praise fhall never end.•

The Song of Simeon.

ORD, at thy Temple we appear,
As happy Simeon came,

And hope to meet our Savior here;
O make our joys the fame!

With what divine, and vaft delight
The good old man was fill'd,
When, fondly in his wither'd arms,
He clafp'd the holy Child!

"Now I can leave this world, he cry'd;
"Behold thy fervant dies!
"I've feen thy great Salvation, Lord,
"And close my peaceful eyes."

Jefus the vifion of thy Face

Hath overpow'ring charms!

Scarce fhall we feel death's cold embrace, If Chrift be in our arms.

TAYLOR'S Col.

He took not on him the Nature of Angels; but be took on him the Seed of Abraham.

N

TOW let the faints declare The praifes of their King: Bound by ten thoufand ties they are, His wond'rous love to fing.

Not angels round the throne,
Of majesty above,

Are half fo much oblig'd, as we,
To our Immanuel's love.

They nevet funk so low

They are not rais'd fo high:
They never knew fuch depths of woe,
Such heights of majesty!

Lefs favor'd were the pow'rs,

Who in his Image stood :

Their crowns are cheaper far than our's,
Nor coft the Lamb his blood.

The Savior did not join
Their nature to his own:
For them he felt no pangs divine,
Nor breath'd a fingle groan.

May we with Angels vie,
The Savior to adore :

Our debts are greater far than theirs ;
O be our payments more!

The Deity and Humanity of Chrift.

RE the blue heav'ns were stretch'd abroad
From everlasting was the Word;

With God he was; the Word was God,
And must divinely be ador'd.

By his own pow'r all things were made;
By him fupported all things ftand;
He is the whole creation's Head,
And angels fly at his command.

Ere fin was born, or fatan fell,
He led the host of morning ftars;
(Thy generation who can tell,

Or count the number of thy years?)

;

But lo, he leaves those heav'nly forms
The Word defcends and dwells in clay,
That he may hold converfe with worms,
Drefs'd in fuch feeble flesh as they.
Mortals with joy beheld his face,
Th' eternal Father's only Son;
How full of truth! how full of grace
When thro' his Eyes the Godhead fhone!
Archangels leave their high abode,
To learn new, myft'ries here, and tell
The love of our defcending God,
The glories of Immanuel!

Chrift's Miracles.

EHOLD, the blind their fight receive!

The dumb fpeak wonders, and the lame
Leap like the hart, and bless his name.
Thus doth th' eternal Spirit own,
And feal the.miffion of the Son;
The Father vindicates his cause,
While he hangs bleeding on the cross.
He dies; the heav'ns in mourning ftood:
He rifes; and appears a God:

Behold the Lord afcending high,
No more to bleed, no more to die!

Hence and for ever from my heart
I bid my doubts and fears depart;
And to thofe hands my foul refign,
Which bear credentials fo divine.

His natures two, his perfon one,
Myfterious and divine.

The root of David, here we find,
And off-fpring, are the same :
Eternity and time are join'd

In our Immanuel's name.

Bleft he that comes to wretched man,
With peaceful news from heav'n!
Hofannas, of the highest strain,

To Chrift the Lord be giv'n.

Should we, dear Lord, refuse to take
Th' hofanna on our tongues,

The rocks and stones would rife and break
Their filence into songs.

OSANNA to our conqu'ring King!
All-hail, Incarnate Love!

Ten thousand thousand glories wait
To crown thy head above.
