the various branches at different decennial periods since the Bequest came into operation, the calculation being made for 123 schools: The much larger proportion of the pupils enrolled for English who also learn writing and arithmetic is even more satisfactory than the increase in the numbers studying Latin, Greek, and French. School Accommodations.-The dwelling-houses (the average number of rooms being now nearly six, whereas it was reported as being nearly five in 1854), school-houses, school-furniture, and apparatus, have much improved during the last decade (p. 335). Emoluments.-The incomes of the teachers from all sources have risen from an average of £101, 1s. 7d. to £122, 6s. 3d. The following Table exhibits the increase in the emoluments of the parochial teachers since 1833 1833. £55 12 4 £97 16 6 £101 1 7 £122 6 3 1 Exclusive of Government grants. Cost of Schooling.-The education of each child enrolled on the parochial school-books of the three counties costs about 21s. per annum, including fees (but excluding from the calculation the value of schoolroom, Privy Council grants, and the Milne Bequest, which would raise it to about 25s. per scholar in Aberdeenshire).1 It would be ungracious as well as unjust to conclude this Report without recording the satisfaction which I have had in my official intercourse with the masters connected with the Bequest. Conscientiousness, thoughtfulness, courtesy, and openness and fairness of mind, I have found to be characteristics of the great majority of the teachers. The work of visitation, accordingly, has been to me a pleasant labour of co-operation rather than a disagreeable critical task. 1 The Milne Bequest does not extend its benefits beyond the county of Aberdeen.
