107 i It came upon the midnight clear, 13 Oye, beneath life's crushing load, That glorious song of old,

Whose forms are bending low, From angels bending near the earth Who toil along the climbing way, To touch their harps of gold :

With painful steps and slow, “Peace to the earth, good-will to man, Look up ! for glad and golden hours

From heaven's all-gracious King :” | Come swiftly on the wing; The earth in solemn stillness lay, Oh rest beside the weary road, To hear the angels sing.

And hear the angels sing !

2 Still through the cloven skies they come, ! 4 For lo, the days are hastening on, With peaceful wings unfurled ;

By prophet-bards foretold, And still celestial music floats

When with the ever-circling years O'er all the weary world ;

Comes round the age of gold ! Above its sad and lowly plains

When peace shall over all the earth They bend on heavenly wing,

Its final splendors fling, And ever o'er its Babel sounds,

And the whole world send back the song The blesséd angels sing.

Which now the angels sing !

| 109 I HARK! what celestial sounds, 1 HARK! hark !—the notes of joy What music fills the air !

Roll o'er the heavenly plains,
Soft warbling to the morn,

And seraphs find employ
It strikes the ravished ear;

For their sublimest strains ;
Now all is still ; | In tuneful notes, Some new delight in heaven is known;
Now wild it floats | Loud,sweet and shrill. Loud sound the harps around the throne.
2 The angelic hosts descend

2 Hark! hark !—the sounds draw nigh, With harmony divine ;

The joyful hosts descend ;
See how from heaven they bend, Jesus forsakes the sky,
And in full chorus join :

To earth His footsteps bend; “Fear not,” say they ; | Jesus, your King, He comes to bless our fallen race; “Great joy we bring: | Is born to-day. He comes with messages of grace. 3 “ He comes, your souls to save 3 Bear, bear the tidings round; From death's eternal gloom ;

Let every mortal know
To realms of bliss and light

What love in God is found,
He lifts you from the tomb :

What pity He can show ;
Your voices raise ; | Your songs unite Ye winds that blow, ye waves that roll,
With sons of light Of endless praise. Bear the glad news from pole to pole.
4 “Glory to God on high !

4 Strike, strike the harps again, Ye mortals, spread the sound,

To great Immanuel's name ;
And let your raptures fly

Arise, ye sons of men,
To earth's remotest bound;

And all His grace proclaim ;
For peace on earth, | To man is given, Angels and men, wake every string,
From God in heaven | At Jesus' birth.” | 'Tis God the Saviour's praise we sing!

| 3 Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith 1 While shepherds watched their flocks

Appeared a shining throng by night,

Of angels, praising God, who thus All seated on the ground,

Addressed their joyful song : The Angel of the Lord came down,

“All glory be to God on high,

And to the earth be peace ; And glory shone around. "Fear not,” said he,-for mighty dread

Good-will henceforth from Heaven to

men Had seized their troubled mind, “Glad tidings of great joy I bring

Begin, and never cease !" To you and all mankind.

DOXOLOGY. 2. “To you, in David's town, this day, I The God of mercy be adored, Is born of David's line,

Who calls our souls from death, The Saviour who is Christ, the Lord ; Who saves by His redeeming word And this shall be the sign :

And new-creating breath; The Heavenly Babe you there shall find To praise the Father and the Son To human view displayed,

And Spirit all-divine, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, The One in Three, and Three in One, And in a manger laid."

Let saints and angels join.

Come and worship, I HARK! what mean those holy voices, Worship Christ the new-born King.

Sweetly sounding through the skies? 2 Shepherds, in the field abiding, Lo, the angelic host rejoices;

Watching o'er your flocks by night, . Heavenly hallelujahs rise.

God with man is now residing ; 2 Hear them tell the wondrous story, Yonder shines the infant-light; Hear them chant in hymns of joy,

Come and worship, “Glory in the highest, glory!

Worship Christ the new-born King. Glory be to God most high!

3 Sages, leave your contemplations, 3 “Peace on earth, good-will from heaven, | Brighter visions beam afar ; Reaching far as man is found ;

Seek the great Desire of nations ; Souls redeemed, and sin forgiven!

Ye have seen His natal star; Loud our golden harps shall sound. Come and worship, 4 “Christ is born, the great Anointed ; Worship Christ the new-born King.

Heaven and earth His praises sing! | 4 Saints, before the altar bending, Oh receive whom God appointed

Watching long in hope and fear, For your Prophet, Priest, and King!

Suddenly the Lord, descending, 5 "Haste, ye mortals, to adore Him, In His temple shall appear ;

Learn His name, and taste His joy, Come and worship, Till in heaven, ye sing before Him, Worship Christ the new-born King. Glory be to God most high!”

5 Sinners, wrung with true repentance, 113

Doomed for guilt to endless pains, I INGELS, from the realms of glory, Justice now revokes the sentence ;

Wing your flight o'er all the earth, Mercy calls you ; break your chains; Te who sang creation's story,

Come and worship,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth;

Worship Christ the new-born King.
