SILVER STREET. S. M.

97

I AWAKE, and sing the song
Of Moses and the Lamb;

Wake, every heart and every tongue
To praise the Saviour's name.

2 Sing of His dying love;

Sing of His rising power;
Sing how He intercedes above
For those whose sins He bore.

3 Sing till we feel our heart

Ascending with our tongue;
Sing till the love of sin depart,
And grace inspires our song.
4 Sing on your heavenly way,

Ye ransomed sinners sing;
Sing on, rejoicing every day

In Christ the Eternal King. 5 Soon shall ye hear Him say,

"Ye blessed children, come;" Soon will He call you hence away, And take His wanderers home.

98

I GRACE! 't is a charming sound,

Harmonious to the ear!
Heaven with the echo shall resound,

And all the earth shall hear.

2 Grace first contrived the way To save rebellious man ;

And all the steps that grace display
Which drew the wondrous plan.

3 Grace led my roving feet

To tread the heavenly road;
And new supplies each hour I meet,
While pressing on to God.

4 Grace all the work shall crown,
Through everlasting days;

It lays in heaven the topmost stone,
And well deserves the praise.

99

I RAISE your triumphant songs
To an immortal tune;

Let the wide earth resound the deeds
Celestial grace has done.

2 Sing how Eternal Love

Its chief Belovéd chose,

And bade Him raise our wretched race
From their abyss of woes.

3 His hand no thunder bears,

No terror clothes His brow,

No bolts to drive our guilty souls
To fiercer flames below.

4 'Twas mercy filled the throne,
And wrath stood silent by,
When Christ was sent with pardons
down

To rebels doomed to die.

I PLUNGED in a gulf of dark despair,
We wretched sinners lay,
Without one cheerful beam of hope,
Or spark of glimmering day.

2 With pitying eyes the Prince of grace Beheld our helpless grief;

He saw, and-oh, amazing love!--
He ran to our relief.

3 Down from the shining seats above,
With joyful haste He fled,
Entered the grave in mortal flesh,
And dwelt among the dead.

4 Oh, for this love let rocks and hills

Their lasting silence break;
And all harmonious human tongues
The Saviour's praises speak.

5 Angels, assist our mighty joys;

Strike all your harps of gold;

But when you raise your highest notes,

[blocks in formation]

3 To him Thou hourly deign'st to give New mercies from on high;

Didst quit Thy throne with him to live,
For him, in pain to die.

4 Close to Thine own bright seraphim
His favored path is trod;
And all beside are serving him,
That he may serve his God.

[blocks in formation]

I O LORD, how good, how great art Thou, 4 He comes, the broken heart to bind,

In heaven and earth the same! There angels at Thy footstool bow, Here babes Thy grace proclaim.

2 When glorious in the nightly sky

Thy moon and stars I see,
Oh, what is man, I wondering cry,
To be so loved by Thee!

The bleeding soul to cure,

And, with the treasures of His grace,

Enrich the humble poor.

5 Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim,
And heaven's eternal arches ring
With Thy belovéd name.

3 No more let sin and sorrow grow, Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make His blessings flow 6 With joy the chorus we repeat,—

Far as the curse is found.

4 He rules the world with truth and grace,

And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love.

105

I MORTALS, awake, with angels join
And chant the solemn lay;
Joy, love, and gratitude combine
To hail the auspicious day.

2 In heaven the rapturous song began,
And sweet seraphic fire
Through all the shining legions ran,

And strung and tuned the lyre.

"Glory to God on high!

Good-will and peace are now complete ; Jesus is born to die!"

106

I THEN shone almighty Power and Love
In all their glorious forms,
When Jesus left His throne above,
To dwell with sinful worms.

2 Adoring angels tuned their songs
To hail the joyful day;

With rapture then let mortal tongues Their grateful worship pay.

3 Hail, Prince of life, forever hail! Redeemer, Brother, Friend!

Tho' earth, and time, and life should fail, Thy praise shall never end.
