636 i OH, sweetly breathe the lyres above, When angels touch the quivering string, And wake, to chant Immanuel's love,

Such strains as angel-lips can sing ! 2 And sweet on earth the choral swell,

From mortal tongues, of gladsome lays,
When pardoned souls their raptures tell,

And, grateful, hymn Immanuel's praise. 3 Jesus, Thy name our souls adore;

We own the bond that makes us Thine;
And carnal joys, that charmed before,

For Thy dear sake we now resign. 4 Our hearts, by dying love subdued,

Accept Thine offered grace to-day;
Beneath the cross, with blood bedewed,

We bow and give ourselves away. 5 In Thee we trust, on Thee rely;

Though we are feeble, Thou art strong;
Oh keep us till our spirits fly

To join the bright, immortal throng! 637 i Come, ever-blesséd Spirit, come, And make Thy servants' hearts Thy

Thus consecrated, Lord, to Thee,

May each a living temple be.
2 Enrich that temple's holy shrine

With sevenfold gifts of grace divine ;
With Wisdom, Light, and Knowledge

Strength, Counsel, Fear, and Godliness.

3 Arm these, Thy youthful soldiers, Lord,

With shield of faith and Spirit's sword; Forth to the battle may they go,

And boldly fight against the foe.
4 With banner of the cross unfurled,

Oh may they overcome the world ;
And so, at last, receive from Thee

The palm and crown of victory. 5 O Trinity in Unity,

One only God and Persons Three I
In Whom, through Whom, by Whom

we live,
To Thee we praise and glory give.
6 Oh grant us so to use Thy grace

That we may see Thy glorious Face; And ever, with the heavenly host,

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. 638 1 While in the hours of blooming youth,

My God, I've felt and owned Thy truth; Thy mercies, with increasing age,

Shall still my grateful heart engage. 2 No human power shall e'er control

This settled purpose of my soul ;
Or urge my constant mind to stray,

But where Thy wisdom points the way. 3 To Thee, O Lord, myself I give;

'Tis to Thy glory I would live : My God, my Strength, my Hope, my

Joy, Thy praise shall all my powers employ.

1 YE men and angels, witness now!

Before the Lord we speak;
To Him we make our solemn vow,

A vow we dare not break :
2 That, long as life itself shall last,

Ourselves to Christ we yield;
Nor from His cause will we depart,

Nor ever quit the field.
3 We trust not in our native strength,

But on His grace rely;
May He, with our returning wants,

All needful aid supply.
4 Oh guide our doubtful feet aright,

And keep us in Thy ways;
And while we turn our vows to prayers,

Turn Thou our prayers to praise.
1 PLANTED in Christ, the living Vine,

This day, with one accord, Ourselves, with humble faith and joy,

We yield to Thee, O Lord !
2 Joined in one body may we be;

One inward life partake;
One be our heart, one heavenly hope

In every bosom wake.
3 In prayer, in effort, tears, and toils,

One wisdom be our guide ;

Taught by one Spirit from above,

In Thee may we abide. 4 Then, when among the saints in light

Our joyful spirits shine,
Shall anthems of immortal praise,

O Lamb of God, be Thine ! 641 I OPPRESSED with noon-day's scorching

To yonder cross I flee,
Beneath its shelter take my seat :

No shade like this for me! 2 Beneath that cross clear waters burst,

A fountain sparkling free ;
And there I quench my desert thirst :

No spring like this for me!
3 A stranger here, I pitch my tent

Beneath this spreading tree;
Here shall my pilgrim life be spent:

No home like this for me!
4 For burdened ones a resting-place

Beside that cross I see ;
I here cast off my weariness :

No rest like this for me!

DOXOLOGY. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

The God whom we adore ; Be glory, as it was, is now,

And shall be evermore.

3 'Tis done the great transaction's done! i LORD, I am Thine, entirely Thine,

I am my Lord's, and He is mine;

He drew me, and I followed on,
Purchased and saved by blood divine;

Glad to obey the voice divine.
With full consent Thine I would be,
And own Thy sovereign right in me.

4 Now rest, my long divided heart,

Fixed on this blissful centre, rest; 2 Grant one poor sinner more a place

With ashes who would grudge to part, Among the children of Thy grace; A wretched sinner, lost to God,

When called on angels' bread to feast ! But ransomed by Immanuel's blood. 5 High Heaven, that heard the solemn

vow, 3 Thine would I live, Thine would I die,

That vow renewed shall daily hear, Be Thine through all eternity;

Till in life's latest hour I bow, The vow is passed beyond repeal ;

And bless in death a bond so dear. And now I set the solemn seal. 4 Here at that cross where flows the 644 blood

1 Who can describe the joys that rise That bought my guilty soul for God, Through all the courts of paradise, Thee, my new Master now I call, To see a prodigal return, And consecrate to Thee my all.

To see an heir of glory born! 5 Do Thou assist a feeble worm 2 With joy the Father doth approve

The great engagement to perform ; The fruit of His eternal love;
Thy grace can full assistance lend, The Son with joy looks down and sees

And on that grace I dare depend. The purchase of His agonies. 643

3 The Spirit takes delight to view

The holy soul He formed anew; 1 O HAPPY day, that stays my choice

And saints and angels join to sing On Thee, my Saviour and my God!

The growing empire of their King. Well may this glowing heart rejoice, And tell its raptures all abroad.

DOXOLOGY. 2 0 happy bond, that seals my vows Now to the Father, and the Son To Him who merits all my love!

Who rose from death, be glory given, Let cheerful anthems fill His house, With Thee, O Holy Comforter, While to that sacred shrine I move. Henceforth, by all in earth and heaven.

1 If human kindness meets return,

And owns the grateful tie;
If tender thoughts within us burn

To feel a friend is nigh:
2 Oh, shall not warmer accents tell

The gratitude we owe
To Him who died our fears to quell,

Our more than orphan's woe ! 3 While yet His anguished soul surveyed

Those pangs He would not flee, What love His latest words displayed,

.“ Meet and remember Me!” 4 Remember Thee! Thy death, Thy

Our sinful hearts to share !
O memory, leave no other name

But His recorded there !
I ACCORDING to Thy gracious word,

In meek humility,
This will I do, my dying Lord,

I will remember Thee.
2 Thy Body, broken for my sake,

My bread from heaven shall be ;
Thy testamental cup I take,

And thus remember Thee. 3 Gethsemane can I forget?

Or there Thy conflict see,
Thine agony and bloody sweat,

And not remember Thee ? 4 When to the cross I turn mine eyes,

And rest on Calvary,

O Lamb of God, my Sacrifice !

I must remember Thee.
5 Remember Thee, and all Thy pains,

And all Thy love to me!
Yea, while a breath, a pulse remains,

Will I remember Thee. 6 And when these failing lips grow dumb,

And mind and memory flee,
When Thou shalt in Thy kingdom come,

Jesus, remember me !
1 How sweet and awful is the place,

With Christ within the doors,
While everlasting love displays

The choicest of her stores ! 2 While all our hearts, and all our songs,

Join to admire the feast,
Each of us cries with thankful tongue,

“Lord, why was I a guest ?”. 3. “Why was I made to hear Thy voice,

And enter while there's room,
When thousands make a wretched

choice, And rather starve than come?". 4 'T was the same love that spread the

That sweetly forced us in ;
Else we had still refused to taste,

And perished in our sin.
5 Pity the nations, 0 our God !

Constrain the earth to come ;
Send Thy victorious word abroad,

And bring the strangers home.
