שָׁם אֶהֶלוֹ מִיַּד בְּנֵי־חֲמוֹר אֲבִי שְׁכֶם בְּמֵאָה קְשִׂיטֶה :

20 וַיִּצְב־־שָׁם מִזְבֵּחַ וַיִּקְרָא־לוֹ אֵל אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל : חמישי . ס וַתֵּצֵא דִינָה בַּת־לֵאָה אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה לִיעֶקֶב לד לִרְאוֹת בִּבְנְוֹת הָאָרֶץ : 2 וַיַּרְא אֹתָהּ שְׁכֶס בֶּן־חֲמוֹר

הַחִוּי נְשִׂיא הָאָרֶץ וַיִּקַח אֹתָהּ וַיִּשְׁכַּב אֹתָהּ וַיִעַנְהָ: הנערה ק' 3 וַתִּדְבַּק נַפְשׁוֹ בְּדִינָה בַּת־עֵקֶב וַאֲהַב אֶת־הַנער הנערה ק' וַיְדַבֵּר עַל־לֵב הַבַּער : 4 וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁכֶם אֶל־חֲמוֹר אָבִיו

לֵאמֹר קַח־לִי אֶת־הַיַּלְדָה הַזֹּאת לְאִשָּׁה : 5 וְיַעַקְב שָׁמַע כִּי טְמֵא אֶת־דִינָה בִתּוֹ וּבָנָיו הָיוּ אֶת־מִקְנֵהוּ בַּשָּׂדֶה וְהֵחֵרְשׁ יַעֲקב עַד־בּאָם: 6 ויצא חֲמוֹר אֲבִי־ שְׁכֶם אֶל־יעקב לְדַבֵּר אִתּוֹ : 7 וּבְנֵי יַעֲקב, בָּאוּ מִן־ הַשָּׂדֶה כְּשָׁמְעָם וַיִּתְעַצְבוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים וַיִּחַר לָהֶם מְאֹד כִּי נְבָלָה עָשָׂה בְיִשְׂרָאֵל לִשְׁכַּב אֶת־בַּת־יַעֲקֹב וְכֵן לֹא יַעֲשֶׂה : 8 וַיְדַבֵּר חֲמוֹר אִתָּם לֵאמֹר שְׁכֶם בְּנִי חָשְׁקָה נַפְשׁוֹ בְּבִתְכֶם תְּנוּ נָא אֹתָהּ לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה: 9 וְהִתְחַתְּנוּ אֹתָנוּ בְּנְתֵיכֶם תִּתְּנוּ־לָנוּ וְאֶת־בְּנֹתֵינוּ תִּקְחוּ לָכֶם : 10 וְאִתָּנוּ תִּשְׁבוּ וְהָאָרֶץ תִּהְיֶה לִפְנֵיכֶם שְׁבוּ וּסְחָרוּהָ וְהֵאָחֲזוּ בָּהּ: 11 וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁכֶם אֶל־אָבִיהָ וְאֶל־אַחֶיהָ אֶמְצָא־חֵן בְּעֵינֵיכֶם וַאֲשֶׁר תּאמְרָוּ אֵלַי אֶתֵּן: 12 הַרְבּוּ

עָלַי מְאֹד מְהַר וּמַתָּן וְאֶתְּנָה כַּאֲשֶׁר תּאמְרוּ אֵלָי וּתְנוּ הנערה ק'לִי אֶת־הַנַּעַר לְאִשָּׁה : 13 וַיְעָנוּ בְנֵי־יַעֲקב אֶת־שְׁכֶם

וְאֶת־חֲמוֹר אָבִיו בְּמִרְמָה וַיְדַבֵּרוּ אֲשֶׁר טְמֵא אֵת דִּינָה אֲדֹתָם : 14 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֲלֵיהֶם לֹא נוּכַל לַעֲשׂוֹת הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה לָתֵת אֶת־אֲחֹתִינוּ לְאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ עָרְלָה כִּי־חֶרְפָּה הִוא לָנוּ : 15 אַךְ־בְּזְאת נִיּוֹת לָכֶם אֵם תִּהְיוּ כָמֹנוּ לְהִמָּל לָכֶם כָּל־זָכָר: 16 וְנָתַנוּ אֶת־בְּנֹתֵינוּ לָכֶם וְאֶת־ בְּנְתֵיכֶם נָקַח־לָנוּ וְיָשַׁבְנוּ אִתְּכֶם וְהָיִינוּ לְעַם אֶחָך : 17 וְאִם־לֹא תִשְׁמְעוּ אֵלֵינוּ לְהִמּוֹל וְלָקַחְנוּ אֶת־בְּתֵּני וְהָלָכְנוּ : 18 וַיִּיטְבוּ דִבְרֵיהֶם בְּעֵינֵי חֲמוֹר וּבְעֵינֵי שְׁכֶן

* Hence we may perceive the care, and affection of Jacob towards his wives and children, in thus exposing himself first to the danger, if any, that they might have time to escape.

Heb. To thee. .. Heb. Be that to thee is thine. This, according to the Hebrew, is, according to the fout of the work which is before me, and according to the foot of the children. And, by the expression, the folk, he meant the sheep; 25 being his work, or employment as a shephord. See Aben Ezra I Heb. Set, or place.

t Heb. Wherefore is this? 49 Shechem is the name of a city, not of a province; therefore Shelem cannot mean a city of Shechen, but is an adjective, meaning perfect, successful, not having met with any accident; this being an introduction to the subject of Dinah, which follows in the next chapter. This arrival at Shechem might be after his journey to his brother at Seir, and after having been to see his father, though not here expressed.

גַּם־־לֵאָה וִילָדֶיהָ וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ וְאַחַר נִגַּשׁ יוֹסֶף וְרָחֵל וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ : 8 וַיֹּאמֶר מִי לִךְ כָּל־הַמַּחֲנֶה הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר פָּגַשְׁתִּי וַיֹּאמֶר לִמְצא־־חֵן בְּעֵינֵי אֲדֹנִי: 9: וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂו יֶשׁ־לִי רֶב אָחִי יְהִי לְךָ אֲשֶׁר־לָךְ: 10 וַיֹּאמֶר יֶעֲקב אַל־־נָא אִם־־נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינִיךְ וְלָקַחְתָּ מִנְחָתִי מִיָּדִי כִּי עַל־־כֵּן רָאִיתִי פָנֶיךְ כִּרְאֹת פְּנֵי אֱלֹהִים וַתִּרְצֵנִי ; 11 קַח־נָא אֶת־בִּרְכָתִי אֲשֶׁר הָבָאת לָךְ כִּי־ חַנֵּנִי אֱלֹהִים וְכִי יֶשׁ־לִי־כֵל וַיִּפְצַר־בּוֹ וַיִּקְח: 12 וַיֹּאמֶר נִסְעֶה וְנֵלֵכָה וְאֵלְכָה לְנֶגְדִּךְ : 13 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֲדֹנִי ידע כִּי־הַיְלָדִים רַבִּים וְהַצְאן וְהַבָּקָר עֶלְוֹת עָלָי וּדְפָקוּם יוֹם אֶחָד וָמֵתוּ כָּל־הַצְאָן : 14 יַעֲבָר־נָא אֲדֹנִי לִפְנֵי עַבְדּוֹ וַאֲנִי אֶתְנַחֲלָה לְאִמִּי לְרֶגֶל הַמְלָאכָה אֲשֶׁר לְפָנָי וּלְרֶגֶל הַיְלָדִים עֶר אֲשֶׁר־אָבִא אֶל־אֲדֹנִי שֵׂעִירָה : 15 וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂר אַבִּינָה־נָא עֶמְךְ מִן־הָעָם אֲשֶׁר אִתִּי וַיֹּאמֶר לָמָּה זֶה אֶמְצָא־חֵן בְּעֵינֵי אֲדֹנִי: 16 וַיָּשָׁב בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא עֵשָׂו לְדַרְכּוֹ שָׂעֶירָה: 17 וַיַּעֲקב נָסַע סְכֹּתָה וַיִּבֶן לוֹ בֵּית וּלְמִקְנֵהוּ עָשָׂה סְכֹּת עַל־כֵּן קָרָא שֵׁם־הַמָּקוֹם סְכְּות : ס 18 וַיָּבא יעקב שָׁלֵם עיר שְׁכֶם אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן בְּבֹאוֹ מִפַּדַּן אֲרָם וַיִּחַן אֶת־ פְּנֵי הָעִיר : 19 וַיִּקֶן אֶת־חֶלֶקֶת הַשָּׂדֶה אֲשֶׁר נָטָה־
