PREFACE.

This volume is based on one with the same title published in England, in 1841, which the Editor has revised, and perhaps improved. The Senti. ments have been called younger sisters of the Passions, differing from them only in intensity; but Dr. WEBSTER says they are only the thoughts prompted by feeling, perfectly distinct from feeling itself. Whatever may be the true definition of the word, the expressions of admiration, adoration, content, courage, friendship, gratitude, honour, liberty, mercy, patriotism, and superstition, in this volume, constitute an agreeable poetical miscellany, which may be read with as much advantage as if there had been never a diversity of opinion as to the meaning of the title under which they are now published.
