Expanding with th' expanding soul, Its waters shall o'erflow the world 3 Flow to restore, but not destroy;

As when the cloudless lamp of day
Pours out its floods of light and joy,
And sweeps each lingering mist away.

ASPIRATION.

C. M. H. WARE, JR.

1. FATHER in heaven, to Thee my heart
Would lift itself in prayer;

Drive from my soul each earthly thought,
And show Thy presence there.

2 Each moment of my life renews
The mercies of my Lord;
Each moment is itself a gift
To bear me on to God.

3 0 help me break the galling chains
This world has round me thrown,
Each passion of my heart subdue,
Each darling sin disown.

4 O Father, kindle in my breast
A never-dying flame

138.

Of holy love, of grateful trust
In Thine almighty Name.

1 GRACIOUS Spirit, Love divine.
Let Thy light within me shine!
All my doubts and fears remove,
Fill me with Thy heavenly love.

2 Life and peace to me impart ;
Seal salvation on my heart;
Breathe Thyself into my breast,
Earnest of immortal rest.

3 Let me never from Thee stray,
Keep me in the narrow way;
Fill my soul with joy divine;
Keep me, Lord, forever Thine.

1"COME, all ye souls by sin oppressed,
Ye restless wanderers after rest,

Ye poor and maimed, and halt and blind,
In me a hearty welcome find."

2 My soul, no more refuse t' embrace
The plenitude of Gospel grace ;—
The trustful fear, the feeling sense,
The mystic joys of penitence ;-

3 The tears that speak thy sins forgiven,
The sighs that waft the soul to heaven ;-
The genuine, meek humility;

The wonder," Why such love to me?"

4 Th' all-conq'ring power of saving grace,
The brightness of the Father's face,
The hopes that thee to blessing move,
And all the silent heaven of love.

2 I bow at Thy command,
And filial homage pay;

With heart and life, with tongue and hands,
I'll cheerfully obey.

3 No more would I transress,

As I too oft have done;
But every sinful thought suppress,
Each sinful action shun.

4 Do Thou the strength impart
This purpose to fulfill;

Lord, write Thy laws upon my heart,
That I may do Thy will.

10 HELP US, Lord! each hour of need,
Thy heavenly succor give;

Help us in thought, and word, and deed,
Each hour on earth we live.

2 O help us, when our spirits bleed,
With contrite anguish sore;

And when our hearts are cold and dead,
O help us, Lord, the more.

30 help us, through the prayer of faith,
More firmly to believe;

For still the more the servant hath,
The more shall he receive.

4 0 help us, Father, from on high;
We know no help but Thee;
O help us so to live and die,

Thine evermore to be.

1 AWAKE, my soul! stretch every nerve,
And press with vigor on;

A heavenly race demands thy zeal,
And an immortal crown.

2 A cloud of witnesses around
Hold thee in full survey:
Forget the steps already trod,
And onward urge thy way.

3 'T is God's all-animating voice
That calls thee from on high;
'Tis His own hand presents the prize
To thine aspiring eye:

4 That prize, with peerless glories bright,
Which shall new luster boast,

When victors' wreaths and monarchs' gems
Shall blend in common dust.

143.

L. M. MRS. Barbauld

1 AWAKE, my soul! lift up thine eyes;
See where thy foes against thee rise,
In long array, a numerous host;
Awake, my soul! or thou art lost.

2 See where rebellious passions rage,
And fierce desires and lusts engage;
See Pleasure's silken banners spread,
And willing souls are captive led.

3 Thou tread'st upon enchanted ground;
Perils and snares beset thee round;
Beware of all; guard every part;
But most, the traitor in thy heart.

4 Come, then, my soul! now learn to wield
The weight of thine immortal shield;
Put on the armor from above.

Of heavenly truth, and heavenly love.

10 LET our lips and lives express
The holy Gospel we profess!
O let our works and virtues shine,
And prove the doctrine all divine!

WATTS

2 Our flesh and sense must be denied,
Passion and envy, lust and pride,
While justice, temperance, truth, and love
Our inward piety approve.

3 Thus shall we best proclaim abroad
The honors of our Saviour, God,
When His salvation reigns within,
And grace subdues the power of sin.

[blocks in formation]

1 My God! permit me not to be
A stranger to myself and Thee:
Amid a thousand thoughts I rove,
Forgetful of my highest love.

WATTS

2 Why should my passions mix with earth,
And thus debase my heavenly birth?
Why should I cleave to things below,
And let my God, my Saviour, go?

3 Call me away from flesh and sense,
Thy sovereign Word can draw me thence;
I would obey the voice divine,

And all inferior joys resign.

4 Be earth, with all her scenes, withdrawn ; Let noise and vanity be gone;

In secret silence of the mind,

My heaven, and there my God, I find.
