thy mercy alone, that we are not confumed: For our fins have cried to heaven against us, and our iniquities juftly called for vengeance upon us. But thou haft not dealt with us after our fins, nor rewarded us after our iniquities; nor given us over, as we deferved, to be a prey to our enemies; but haft in mercy delivered us from their malice, and preferved us from death and deftruction. Let the confideration of this thy repeated goodness, O Lord, work in us true repentance, that iniquity may not be our ruin; and increase in us more and more a lively faith and love, fruitful in all holy obedience; that thou mayeft ftill continue thy favour, with the light of thy Gospel, to us and our pofterity for evermore; and that for thy dear Son's fake Jefus Chrift, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. Inftead of the Prayer [In time of War and Tumults] fhall be used this Prayer following.

LORD, who didft this day discover the fnares of death that were laid for us, and didst wonderfully deliver us from the fame; be thou ftill our mighty Protector, and scatter our enemies that delight in blood: Infatuate and defeat their counfels, abate their pride, affuage their malice, and confound their devices. Strengthen the hands of our gracious fovereign King GEORGE, and all that are put in authority under him, with judgment and justice, to cut off all fuch workers of iniquity, as turn religion into rebellion, and faith into faction; that they may never prevail against us, or triumph in the ruin of thy Church among us: but that our gracious Sovereign, and his realms, being preferved in thy true religion, and by thy merciful goodnefs protected in the fame, we may all duly ferve thee, and give thee thanks in thy holy congregation, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen. ¶ In the Communion-Service, instead of the Collect for the the Day, fhall this which followeth be used.

ETERNAL God, and our most mighty Protector, we

thy unworthy fervants do humbly prefent ourselves before thy Majefty, acknowledging thy power, wisdom, and goodness, in preferving the King, and the Three Estates of

the realm of England, affembled in Parliament, from the destruction of this day intended against them. Make us, we beseech thee, truly thankful for this, and for all other thy great mercies towards us; particularly for making this day again memorable, by a fresh inftance of thy loving-kindnefs towards us. We blefs thee for giving his late Majesty King William a fafe arrival here, and for making all oppo-. fition fall before him, till he became our king and goWe beseech thee to protect and defend our Soreigu King GEORGE, and all the Royal Family, from all treafons and confpiracies; preserve him in thy faith, fear, and love; prosper his reign with long happiness here on earth; and crown him with everlasting glory hereafter, thro' Jefus Chrift our only Saviour and Redeemer. LET every foul be subject unto the higher powers:

for there is no power but of God: the powers that be, are ordained of God. Whofoever therefore refifteth' the power, refifteth the ordinance of God; and they that refift, fhall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power; do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the fame: for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the fword in vain: for he is the minifter of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be fubject, not only for wrath, but also for confcience fake. For, for this caufe pay ye tribute alfo: for they are God's minifters, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute is due, custom to whom cuftom, fear to whom fear, honour to whom honour.

to go to Jerufalem, and fent meffengers before his face: and they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerufalem. And when his difciples James and John faw this, they faid, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and confume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of fpirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to fave them. And they went to another village.

After the Creed, if there be no Sermon, fhall be read one of the fix Homilies against Rebellion.

This Sentence is to read at the Offertory.

Hatfoever ye would that men fhould do to you,

After the Prayer for the Church Militant, this following Prayer is to be used.

GOD, whofe Name is excellent in all the earth, and thy above the

on and thy glory above the heavens; who on this day didft miraculously preferve our Church and State from the fecret contrivance and hellish malice of Popish confpirators; and on this day alfo didft begin to give us a mighty deliverance from the open tyranny and oppref fion of the fame cruel aud blood-thirsty enemies: We blefs and adore thy glorious Majefty, as for the former, fo for this thy late marvellous loving-kindness to our Church and Nation, in the preservation of our Religion and Liberties. And we humbly pray, that the devout fenfe of this thy repeated mercy may renew and increase in us a fpirit of love and thankfulness to Thee its only Author; a fpirit of peaceable fubmiffion and obedience to our gracious Sovereign Lord King GEORGE; and a fpirit of fervent zeal for our holy Religion, which thou haft fo wonderfully rescued, and established, a bleffing to us and our posterity. And this we beg for Jefus Christ Amen.

Form of Prayer, with Fafting,

TO BE USED YEARLY UPON

THE THIRTIETH OF JANUARY,

Being the Day of the Martyrdom of the Bleffed King Charles the Firft; to implore the Mercy of God, that neither the Guilt of that facred and innocent Blood, nor thofe other fins, by which God was provoked to deliver up both us and our King into the hands of cruel and unreasonable men, may at any time hereafter be vifited upon us or our pofterity.

If this Day shall happen to be a Sunday, this Form of Prayer shall be used, and the Faft kept the next day following. And upon the Lord's Day next before the day to be kept, at Morning Prayer immediately after the Nicene Creed, notice shall be given for the due Obfervation of the faid day..

The Service of the Day shall be the fame with the ufuat Office for Holy-days in all things; except where it is in this Office other wife appointed.

THE ORDER FOR MORNING PRAYER.

He that miniftereth shall begin with one or more of thefe fentences.

'O the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveneffes, though we have rebelled against him: neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws which he fet before us. Dan. ix. 9, 10.

On a Sunday, &c.] It having never been the practice of the Catholic church, nor indeed of any part of it, except the Roman, and the Prefbytetian church in Scotland, to allow of humiliation or fafting on Sundays, which are appointed for duties of a different nature; it is ordered,that if this day shall happen to be Sunday, this form of prayer fhall be used, and the faft kept the next day following. And upon the Lord's day next before the day to be kept, (í. e. on whatever day of the week it shall happen) at morning prayer, immediately after the Nicene Creed, notice shall be given for the due obfervation of the faid day. As to the Service of this day (like that appointed for the Fifth of November) it is to be the fame with the ufual office for Holy-days in all things, except where it is in this office

Thou art juft, O Lord, in all that is brought upon us: for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly. Neh. ix. 33.

Nevertheless our feet were almoft gone: our treadings had well-nigh flipt. Pfalm lxxiii. 2.

For why? we were grieved at the wicked: we did alfa fee the ungodly in fuch profperity ver. 3.

The people ftood up, and the rulers took counsel together: against the Lord, and against his Anointed. Pfalm ii. 2.

They caft their heads together with one confent: and vere confederate against him. Pfalm lxxxiii. 5.

He heard the blafphemy of the multitude, and fear was on every fide: while they confpired together against him, to take away his life. Pfalm xxxi. 15.

They spoke against him with falfe tongues, and compassed him about with words of hatred; and fought against him without a caufe. Pfalm cix. 2.

Yea, his own familiar friends whom he trufted: they that ate of his bread, laid great wait for him. Pfalm xli. 9. They rewarded him evil for good: to the great difcom fort of his foul. Pfalm xxxv. 12.

otherwife appointed; i. e. the ordinary morning and evening fervice, and office for the Communion are to be faid as ufual, except where any thing in either of these fervices is to be added to, or to be used in the room of, the ordinary fervice for the day: as the Collects, for inftance, and the feveral Prayers appointed on thefe occafions, are to be ufed either instead of or befides the prayers daily in ufe; and the Hymns, Pfalms, and Lef fons, the Epiftle and Gospel, instead of thofe in ordinary courfe.
