The Collect.

“Rabbi Judah was wont thus to pray: Let it be thy good pleasure to deliver us from impudent men and impudence, from an evil man, and from an evil chance, from an evil affection, from an evil companion, from an evil neighbour, from Satan the destroyer, from a hard judgment, and from a hard adversary, &c.”—In the 6th of the eighteen prayers used by the Jews is, “Be thou merciful unto us, o our Father, for we have linned; pardon us, O our King, for we have transgreffed against thee.”Whitby, on Mat. vi. 9, says: “ Our Father, which art in heaven,” is in the Jewish Seder Tephilloth, or forms of prayer; “Let thy great name be fanctified, and thy kingdom reign,” in their form called 'Kaddish; “Let thy memory be glorified in heaven above, and in the earth beneath,” in Seder Tephilloth; “ Deliver us not into the hand of temptations, and dehver us from the evil figment," in the 6th of the eighteen prayers, and the book Musar. “For thine is the power, and the kingdom, for ever and ever,” is (faith Drufius) their usual doxology. “Deliver us, &c.” is not in any of the eighteen prayers. Whitby being mistaken in this may mistake also respecting the book Musar.-L'Enfant's Introd. to New Teft. p. 65: “When the nineteen prayers were ended which the people repeated privately, the minister began the public prayers. Their service began and ended with the prayer Cadisch, which runs thus: " Hallowed be his great name in the world, which he has created according to his good pleasure, and may his kingdom be established. May we be. hold his redemption spring up and flourish. May his Melhah suddenly appear in our days, in the days of all the house of Israel, to deliver his people.”

The Collect] This collect was transated, in 1549, almost verbatim from the ancient office of the Western church.

Then fball the Priest] The order for the Communion Service differed much from the present arrangement of it in the first book of Edward VIth. Immediately after the collect, “ Almighty God, unto whom &c.” was introduced the following rubrics and sentences, in lieu of the Commandments:-" Then shall he say a psalm appointed for the introit; which psalm ended, the Priest shall say, or else the Clerks fhiall ling;

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

God: Thou shalt have none other Gods but me. People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hears to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the carth. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and vilit the sins of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and few mercy unto thousands in them that love me, and keep my commandinents.

lifir. Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain : for the Lord will not 'hold him guikless, that taketh his Name in vain.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Remember that thou keep holy the fabbath. day. Six days thalt thou labour, and do all that thou hat to do; but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt do no manner of work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-fervant, and thy maid-fervant, thy cattle, and the stranger that is within thy gates. For in fix days the Lord made heaven and earth, the fea, and all that in them is, and rested the feventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Then the Priest, standing at God's board, shall begin: “ Glory be to God on high.The Clerks. “And in earth peace, good-will towards men. We praise thee, &c.” to the end of that hymn. Then the Priest shall forn him to the people, and say, " The Lord be with you." The Answer. " And with thy spirit.” The Priest. “Let us pray." Then shall follow the collects of the day, with one of these two collects following for the lung.”—The present arrangement of the Communion Service was adopted at the Review of the Liturgy by Edward VIth, and introduced into his fond Prayer-Book.

Minister. Honour thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt do po murder.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not com uit adultery.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not steal.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his servant, Dor his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is his.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Then shall follow one of these two Collects for the King,

Two Collecti] These two prayers were translated in a great measure from the Missal at the Reformation, and introduced into Edward Vith's firft Prayer-Book.

Then shall be read the Gospel, (the People all standing up) saying, The holy Gospel is written in the Chapter of -, beginning at the Verse. And the Gospel ended, shall be sung or said the Creed following, the People still standing as before:

Then shall be said, &c.] In lieu of this rubric, the following ones occur in Edward Vith's first book. “The Collects ended, the Priest, or he that is appointed, fhall read the Epistle in a place alligned for the purpose, saying, “ The Epistle, &c.” The Minister then Thall read the Epistle, Immediately after the Epistle ended, the Priest, or one appointed to read the Gospel, shall say, “The holy Gospel, &c.” The clerks and people shall answer, “ Glory be to thee, O Lord.” The Prieft or Deacon thall then read the Gospel

. After the Gospel ended, the Priest shall begin: “ I believe in one God;" the Clerks shall sing the rest.-N. B. This mode of reciting the Nicene Creed is observed at present in many, if not all the English cathedrals.

The Creed following] There was in the Christian church no entire form of a general Čreed previously to the Council of Nice, (in Bythinia) A. D. 325. This meeting consisted of Christian Prelates from all parts of the world, who composed a form, in opposition to Arian tenets, for the gęs neral use of the church; nearly resembling the above Creed, except that it omitted all the articles subsequent to the words, “ in the Holy Ghost.” About fifty-lix years afterwards, certain heresies having arifen respecting

And I believe one Catholick and Apoftolick Church. I acknowledge one Baptilin for the remission of fins. And I look for the Resurrection of the dead; And the life of the world to come. Amen.

Then the Curate shall declare unto the People what Holydays, or Fasting.days, are in the week following to be observed. And then also (if occasion bej shall notice te

given of the Communion; and Bricfs, Citations, and the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, another council, held at Conftantinople, compleated the form of this symbol, as it now stands in our fervice, by the addition of the following words: in the firt paragraph, “ Heaven and earth, and of.” In the second, “ begotten of his Father, before all words.” In the fourth, “from heaven," and, “by the Holy Ghoft of the Virgin Mary; and, “and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate." In the fifth, “and was buried,” and “ according to the scriptures;” and, "and sitteth on the right hand of the Father.” In the fixit, “ again with glory.". The whole of the seventh, “whole kingdom thall bave no end." in the last paragraph, “ I believe;” and all after the words “Holy Ghost.” -Vide U-Ter. de Symbolis, p. 15, et infra.

Then the Curate] These three rubricks were added at the last Review 1662; before that time the only directions were the following: “After the creed ended, shall follow the fórmon or homily, or some portion of one of the homilies, as they shall be hereafter divided, wherein if the people be not exhorted to the worthy receiving of the lioly Sacrament of the body and
