Psalm xcvi.' Cantate Domino.

a : Lord, all the whole earth. 2 Sing unto the Lord, and praise his Name : be telling of his falvation from day to day.

3 Declare his honour unto the heathen: and his wonders unto all people.

4 For the Lord is great, and cannot worthily be praised: he is more to be feared than all gods.

5 As for all the gods of the heathen, they are but idols: but it is the Lord that made the heavens.

8 Today Although we have often rebelled against Him, and have often been punished for it, yet if now at length we shall attend to his call, and be sincerely obedient, He is most ready to accept our services.

11 Enter into my rest] Of the many thousands that were assembled after their coming out of Egypt, only Caleb and Joshua entered the promised land. The rest here mentioned may be understood to mean that their enemies should no more disturb them, that their ark should be no more captive, but have a rest for ever in Jerusalem. This is my rest for ever, here will I dwell.

Pfalm xcvi.) This is a common thanksgiving and praising of God for all his works of grace and mercy, as the great Creator and Preserver, Redeemer and Judge of the world. It was composed by David, and after wards somewhat altered, when it was used, as it is said, at the rebuilding of the temple after the captivity. It is in its prophetic meaning applicable to Christ's spiritual kingdom, and its effects in the conversion of the Gentiles.

5 Made the heavens] The following beautiful sentiments are ascribed to Pythagoras:

One God our hiearts confess : whoe'er beside
Aspire with Him our homage to divide,
A world as beauteous let him first design,
And say, its fabric finished, “ This is mine."

6 Glory and worship are before him: power and hopour are in his fanctuary.

7 Ascribe unto the Lord, 0 ye kindreds of the people: ascribe unto the Lord worship and power.

8 Ascribe unto the Lord the honour due unto his Name : bring presents, and come into his courts.

9 O worthip the Lord in the beauty of holiness : let the whole earth stand in awe of him.

10 Tell it out among the heathen, that the Lord is King: and that it is he who hath made the round world so fast that it cannot be moved; and how that he shall judge the people righteously.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad: let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is.

12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice before the Lord.

13 For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: and with righteousness to judge the world, and the people with his truth.

Pfalm xcvii. Dominus regnavit. "HE Lord is King, the earth may be glad thereof:

yea, the multitude of the isles may be glad thereof. 2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: rightcousness and judgment are the habitation of his feat. 3 There shall go a fire before him; and burn up

his enemies on every side.

4 His lightnings gave shine unto the world : the earth saw it, and was afraid.

5 The hills melted like was at the presence of the Lord: at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6 The heavens have declared his righteousness: and all the people have seen his glory.

Psalm xcvii.) This pfalm is a hymn of praise to the God of heaven for his works of justice and mercy. It is thought to be composed by David on occasion of his peaceable re-establishment in his kingdom after the rebellion of Absalom; but it as literally contains a prediction of the inaugu. ration of the Mellias in his regal ofice, and the signal exercise of it in the destruction of those who crucilied him, and all other enemies of his kingdom.

6 The heavens) All angels and men shall fee and acknowledge, and proclaim the great justice of it, and the glorious manifestation of the divine power of Christ in the ruin of his malicious adversaries.

7 Confounded be all they that worship carved images. and that delight in vain gods: worship him, all ye gods.

8 Sion heard of it, and rejoiced : and the daughters of Judah were glad, because of thy judgments, O Lord.

9 For thou, Lord, art higher than all that are in the earth : thou art exalted far above all gods,

10 Oye that love the Lord, see that ye hate the thing which is evil: the Lord preferveth the souls of his saints; he shall deliver them from the hand of the ungodly.

11 There is sprung up a light for the righteous: and joyful gladness for such as are true-hearted.

12 Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous : and give thanks for a remembrance of his holiness.

EVENING PRAYER.

Psalm xcviii. Cantate Domino.
Sing unto the Lord a new song: for he hath done

marvellous things. 2. With his own right hand, and with his holy arm: hath he gotten himself the victory.

3 The Lord declared his falvation : his righteousness liath he openiy shewed in the sight of the heathen,

4 He bath remembered his mercy and truth toward the house of Ifrael ; and all the ends of the world have seen the falvation of our God. 5 Shew yourselves joyful unto the Lord, als ус

lands: ling, rejoice, and give thanks.

6 Praise the Lord upon the harp : fing to the barp with a psalm of thanksgiving.

7 With trumpets also and shawms : 0 Mhew yourselves joyful before the Lord the King.

8 Let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is: the round world, and they that dwell therein.

Pfalm xcviii.] This psalm is said to have been composed by David. It is an abridgment of the fong of Mofes, which was celebrated at the delivery of the israelites from Pharoah and the Egyptians, and is a prediction of Christ's kingdom, and the bringing of the Gentiles into fubjection to it,

9 Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the Lord: for he is come to judge the earth.

10 With righteousness shall he judge the world : and the people with equity.

Psalm xcix. Dominus regnavit.
HE Lord is King, be the people never so impatient:

he sitteth between the Cherubims, be the earth never so unquiet.

2 The Lord is great in Sion: and high above all people.

3 They shall give thanks unto thy Name: which is great, wonderful, and huly.

4 The King's power loveth judgment; thou hast prepared equity : thou hast executed judgment and righteousness in Jacob.

5 O magnify the Lord our God: and fall down before his footstool, for he is holy.

6 Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among such as call upon his Name : these called upon the Lord, and he heard them. . 7 He spake unto them out of the cloudy pillar : for they kept his testimonies, and the law that he gave them.

8 Thou heardest them, O Lord our God: thou forgavest them, O God, and punishedst their own inventions.

9 O magnify the Lord our God, and worship him upon his holy hill: for the Lord our God is holy.

9 Clap their hands] The whole heathen world is here expressed by the

parts of this visible globe-sea, and world, and rivers, and hills; as before in pfalm xcvi. by earth, and fea, and field, and trees.

Psalm xcix.] This pfalm, anciently attributed to David, seems first to refer to his quíet establishment in that throne to which God had chosen him, but prophetically also to the kingdom of the Messias.

* Aing's power] This is thought to be a phrase familiar to the antient Greek writers to express the king himself, as Homer uses the strength of Hercules for Hercules.

Pfalm c. Jubilate Deo. O

Be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the

Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song.

2 Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves: we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

3. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name.

4 For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation.

Psalm ci. Misericordiam & judicium. M° Congrah al be of mercy and judgment : unto thee,

2 O let me have understanding : in the way liness!

3 When wilt thou come unto me: I will walk in my house with a perfect heart.

4 I will take no wicked thing in hand : I hate the lins of unfaithfulness: there shall no such cleave unto me.

5 A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.

6 Whoso privily Nandereth his neighbour: him will I destroy.

7 Whoso hath also a proud look and high stomach; I will not suffer him,

of god.

Psalm c.] It is thought that this psalm was appointed to be used at the offering of those peace offerings, which were for a thanksgiving. Ler. vii. 12.

4] This last verse seems to be the response of the whole chorus of priests at the instant the fire was applied to the facrifice.

Psalm ci.] This pfalm, composed by David, expresses his resolution to attend to piety both in his own person and family; and in the administration of the regal office, to encourage yirtue, and to rebuke and punish impiety. It seems to have been written on the occasion of bringing up the ark to the city of David, to qualify them for its presence among them. It is an ad unable directory to all persons in the greatest or the lowest place of authority on earth, to promote virtugus manners and conducta and to discountenance all wickedness,
