After the Gifpel is read, the Minister Mall make this brief Exhortati » upon the Words of the Golpel.

to be brought unto him ; how he blamed those that would have kept them from him ; how he exhorted all men to follow their innocency. Ye perceive how by his outward gelture and deed be declared his good will toward them ; for he embraced them in bis arms, he laid his hands upon them, and blessed them. Doubt ye not therefore, but earneitly believe, that he hath likewise favourably received this present Infant; that he hath embraced him with the arms of his mercy, and (as he hath promised in his holy word) will give unto him the blessing of eternal life, and make him partaker of his everlasting kingdom. Wherefore we being thus perfuaded of the good will of our heavenly Father, declared by his Son Jesus Christ towards this Infant; let us faithfully and devoutly give thanks unto him, and say the Prayer, which the Lord himself hath taught us :

UR Father, which ari in heaven, Hallowed be thý Name; Thy kingdom come ; Thy will be done in

earth, as it is in heaven : Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass again it us ; And lead us not into temptation ;But deliver us from evil. Amen.

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, heavenly Father, we give thee humble thanks, that thou hast vouchfi m this faich in us evermore. Give thy holy Spirit to this Infant, that he being born again, and being made an heir of everlaiting falvation, through our Lord Jesus Chrift, may continue thy servant, and attain thy promise; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, whu liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, row and for ever. of Christs Church, let us give thanks unto Almighty God for these benefits, and with one accord make our prayers unto him, that he may lead the rest of his life according to this beginning.

Then the Priest fall say,
E yield thee most hearty thanks, most merciful Father, that it hath pleased thee to regenerate this In,

fant with thy holy Spirit, to receive him for thine own Child by adoption and to incorporate him into thy holy Church. And humbly we beseech thee to grant, that he being dead unto fin, and living unto righteousness, and being buried with Christ in his death, may crucify the old man, and utterly abolish the whole body of fin; and that as he is made partaker of the death of thy' Son, he may also be partaker of his refursection; so that finally with the residue of thy Holy Church, he may be an inheritor of thine everlafting King-dom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quelt. ' What did your Godfathers and Godmothers then for you?

Answ. They did promise and vow three things in my Name: first, that I should renounce the devil and all his works, the pomps and vanity of this wicked world, and all the finful lufts of the fiel : Secondly, that I should believe all the Articles of the Christian Faith. And thirdly, that I fhould keep Gods holy will and commandments, and walk in the fanie all the days of my life.

Quest. Dost thou not think that thou art bound to believe and do as they liave promised for thee?

Answ. Yes verily; and by Gods help fo I will. And I heartily thank our heavenly Father, that he hath called me to this state of salvation through Jesus Christ our Saviour. And I pray unto God to give me his grace, that I may continue in the fame unto my liies end,

Queft. You said that your Godfatners and Godmothers did proinise for you, that you should keep Gods Com. mandments. Tell me how many there be ?

Answ. Ten.

Quest. Which be they?
Antwer. He same which God spake in the twentieth Chapter of Exodus saying, I am the Lord thy God,

V. Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

X. Thou shall not covet thy neighbours house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbours wife, nor his servant,

his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is his
Quest. What dost thou chiefly learn by these conimardments ?
Anw. I learn two things : My duty towards God, and my duty towards my neighbour.
Queft. What is thy duty towards God?

Antw. My Duty towards God, is to believe in him, to fear him, and to love him with all my heart, with all my mind, with all my soul, and with all my strength; to worship bim, to give him thanks, to púe my whole trutt in him, to call upon him, to honour his holy Name and his word; and to serve him truly all the days of my life.

Quellt. Wnai is thy duty towards thy neighbour?

Adlw. My duty towards my aeighbour is to love him as myself, and to do to all men, as I would they fould do unto me.

To love, honour, and succour my father and mother. To honour and obey the king, and all that are put in authority under him. To submit my self to all my governors, teachers, spiritual pastors and Matters

To order myself lowly and reverently to all my betters. To hurt no body by word or deed. To be truc and juit in all my dealing: To bear no malice or hatred in my heart. To keep my hands from picking ani tealing, and my tongue from evil speaking, lying and fandering. To keep my body in temperance, Sokerness, and chastity: Not to covet or desire other mens goods ; but to learn and labour truly to get my own living, and to do my duty in that state of life unto which it shall please God to call me.

Chatechiit. My good child know this, that thou art not able to do these things of thyself, nor to walk in the commandments of God, and to serve him without his special grace, which thon must learn at all times to call for by diligent prayer. Let me hear therefore if chou canst say the Lords Prayer.

Quest. What defireft thou of God in this Prayer ?

Answ, I defire my Lord God our heavenly Father, who is the giver of all goodness, to send his grace unto me, and to all people, that we may worship him, serve him, and obey him as we ought to do. unto God, that he will send us all things that be needful both for our souls and bodies; and that he will be mercitul unto us, and forgive us our sins; and that it will please him to save and defend us in all dangers ghostly and bodily; and that he will keep us from all sin and wickedness, and from our gholly enemy, and from everlasting death. And this I trust he will do of his mercy and goodness, through our Lord Jesus Christ : and therefore I say, Amen So be it.

Quest. What meanest thou by this word Sacrament?

Answ. I mean an outward and visible fign of an inward and spiritual grace, given unto us, ordained by
Christ himself, as a means whereby we receive the fame, and a pledge to assure us thereof.

Quest. What is the outward visible sign or form in Baptism
Antw. Water : wherein the person is baptized, In the Name of the Fatber, and of the Son, and of the Holy Gloff:

Queft. What is the inward and spiritual grace?

Arw. A death anto fin, and a new birth unto righteousness : for being by nature born in fio, and the chile dren of wrath, we are hereby made the children of grace.

Queit. What is required of persons to be baptized ?

Antw. Repentance, whereby they forsake fin; and faith, whereby they stedfanly believe the promises of God made to them in that Sacrament.

Queit. Why then ase Infants bap:ized, when by reason of their tender age they cannot perform them?

Answ. Because they promise them both by their fureties : which promise, when they come to age, them. selves are bound to perform.

Queit. Why was the Sacrament of the Lords Supper ordained ?

Answ. For the continual remembrance of the facrifice of the death of Christ, and of the benefits which we receive thereby.

Queit. What is the outward part or sign of the Lords Supper?
Answ Bread and Wine, which the Lord hath commanded to be received.
Quest. What is the inward part, or thing signified ?

Answ. The Body and Blood of Christ, which are verily and indeed taken and received by the faithful in the Lord Supper.

Queft. What are the benefits whereof we are partakers thereby ?

Ausw. The itrengthening and refrelning of our souls by the Body and Blood of Christ, as our bodies are by the Bread and Wine.

Quelt. What is required of them who come to the Lords Supper ? Anlw. To exam.ne themselves, whether they repent them truly of their former fins, stedfastly purposing to lead a new life ; have a lively faith in Gods mercy through Christ, with a thankful remembrance of his death; and be in charity witli all men. I mighty and everlasting God, who makelt us both to will and to do those things that be good and accepte

able unto thy divine Majesty ; We make our humble supplications unto thee for these thy servants, upon whom (after the example of thy holy apostles) we have now laid our hands, to certify them (by this fign) of thy favour and gracious goodness towards them. Let thy fatherly hand, we beseech thee, ever be over them ; let thy Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of thy word, thatia the end they may obtain everlasting life, through our Lord Jesus Christ, who with thee and the holy Ghost liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end.
