Tesus answered and said unto him, Art mou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, we speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not; how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eterna! life.

The Collect.

GOD, the strength of all those who

put their trust in thee, mercifully accept our prayers; and because, through the weakness of our mortal nature, we can do no good thing without thee, grant us the help of thy grace, that in keeping thy commandments we may please thee, both in will and deed, through Jesus Christ our Lord Amen

The Epistle. I John iv. 7.

BELO

ELOVED, let us love one another: for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God towards us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him Herein is love, not that we loved God, but tha. he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby

know we that we dwell in him, and he in us; because he hath given us of his Spi- | rit And we have seen and do testify, that the Father sent the Son to be the

Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear; because fear hath torment: He that feareth, is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar for be that loveth not his brother, whom he hath seen, how can he love God, whom be hath not seen? And this command.

65 ment have we from him, that he who loveth God, love his brother also.

The Gospel. St. Luke xvi. 19. "HERE was a certain rich mar., who

was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day. And there was a certain beggar, named Lazarus, who was aid at his gate, full of sores; and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels mto Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried: and in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried, and said. Father Abraham, have mercy on me. and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for an, tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, S., remember that thou in thy life-time ceivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulph fixed: so that they who would pass from hence to you cannot ; neither can they pass to us that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house; for I have five brethren that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear than. And he said, Nay, father Abraham but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent And he said unto him, I they hear not Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

The Epistie. sonn ii. 13. ARVEL not, ny brethren, if the world hate y . We know that we have passed from deat, unto life, because we love the brethren He that loveth not his broti,er, abideth in death Whosoever hateth his brother, is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren

But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him; how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed, and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence towards God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him. because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments, dwelleth in him, and he in him and hereby we know, that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

The Gospel. St. Luke xiv. 16.

A CERTAIN man made a great sup

per, and bade many; and sent his servant at supper-time, to say to them that were bidden, Come. for all things are now ready And they all with one consent began to make excuse: The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it; I pray thee have me excused: And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them; I pray thee have me excused: And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that servant came. and showed his Lord these things. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant. Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled: for I say unto you, that none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper

publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and Scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. And he spake this parable unto them, saying, What man of you having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he bath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoic ing. And when he cometh home, be calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

The Epistle. Rom. viii. 18. RECKON that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity,

The disciple is not above his master; but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. The Gospel. St. Luke v. 1.

came to pass, that as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake, but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed hi that he would thrust out a little from the land and he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now, when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering, said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing nevertheless, at thy word I will let down the net And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes, and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them And they came, and filled both the ships; so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had ta ken; and so was also James and Joha the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. "And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

The Epistle. Rom. vi. 3. "NOW ye not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resur rection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that hence.

Now, if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him, knowing that Christ being raised from the dead, "dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him For in that he died, he died unto sin once; but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin; but alive unto God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Gospel St. Matt. v. 20. ESUS said unto his disciples, Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill, shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause, shall be in danger of the jurigment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou tool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore, if thou bring thy gif to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee, leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the Judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

The Epistle. Rom. vi. 19. SPEAK after the manner of men, because of the infirmity of your flesh : for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness, and to iniquity, unto iniquity, even so now yield your members servants to righteousness, unto holiness For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things, whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death but the

gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Gospel. St. Mark viii. 1. [N those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat and if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way for divers of them came from far And his disciples answered him. From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And he asked them. How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes; and he blessed, and com manded to set them also before them. So they did eat, and were filled; and they took up of the broken meat that was left, seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand And he sent them away.

The Epistle. Rom. viii. 12. BRETHREN, we are debtors not to

the flesh, to live after the flesh : For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die; but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage agai to fear; but ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba. Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ: if so be that we suffer with him, that we

The Gospel St. Matt. vii. 15. BEW QEWARE of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits: do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bring. eth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit; neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

of them God was not well pleased; for
they were overthrown in the wilderness.
Now these things were our examples, to
the intent we should not lust after evil
things, as they also lusted. Neither be
ye idolaters, as were some of them as it
is written, The people sat down to eat

them committed, and fell in one day

us tempt Christ, as some of them also

Neither murmur ye, as some of them al-

they are written for ur adinonition, up-

temptation also make a way to escape,
that ye may be able to bear it.

The Epistle. 1 Cor. xii. 1. (ONCERNING spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man, speaking by the Spirit of God. calleth Jesus accursed; and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God who worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is giv en to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another, the word of know. ledge by the same Spirit; to another, faith by the same Spirit; to another, the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, discerning of spirits; to another, divers kinds of tongues; to another, the interpreta. tion of tongues. But all these worketh that one and the self-same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
