4 Zeal has attained its highest aim,
Its end is satisfied,

If sinners love the Savior's name,—
Nor seeks it aught beside.

5 But self, however well employed,
Has its own ends in view;
And says, as boasting Jehu cried,
'Come, see what I can do.'

6 This idol self, O Lord, dethrone,
And from our hearts remove;
And let no zeal by us be shown
But that which springs from love.

*BEDDOME.

'Fear not.'

1 YE trembling souls! dismiss your fears; Be mercy all your theme, Mercy, which, like a river, flows

In one continued stream.

2 Fear not the powers of earth and hell:
God will these powers restrain;
His mighty arm their rage repel,
And make their efforts vain.

3 Fear not the want of outward good:
He will for his provide,
Grant them supplies of daily food,
And all they need beside.

4 Fear not that he will e'er forsake
Or leave his work undone;

He's faithful to his promises,-
And faithful to his Son.

5 Fear not the terrors of the grave,

Or death's tremendous sting;
He will from death your souls restore-
To endless glory bring.

6 You in his wisdom, power and grace
May confidently trust;

His wisdom guides, his power protects,
His grace rewards the just.

ANONYMOUS.

The Christian encouraged.

1 GIVE to the winds thy fears;
Hope and be undismayed;

God hears thy sighs, and counts thy tears,
God shall lift up thy head.

2 Through waves, through clouds and storms,
He gently clears thy way;
Wait thou his time, so shall the night
Soon end in joyous day.

3 He everywhere hath rule,
And all things serve his night;
His every act pure blessing is,
His path unsullied light.

4 Thou comprehend'st him not;
Yet earth and heaven tell
God sits as sovereign on the throne;
He ruleth all things well.

5 Thou seest our weakness, Lord;
Our hearts are known to thee:
O, lift thou up the sinking hand,
Confirm the feeble knee!

6 Let us, in life or death,
Boldly thy truth declare;

And publish, with our latest breath,
Thy love and guardian care.

WATTS.

The Joy of Conversion. Ps. 126.

1 WHEN God revealed his gracious name,
And changed my mournful state,
My rapture seemed a pleasing dream,
The grace appeared so great.

2 The world beheld the glorious change,
And did thy hand confess;

[ocr errors]

My tongue broke out in unknown strains, And sung surprising grace.

3 Great is the work,' my neighbors cried, And owned thy power divine;

'Great is the work,' my heart replied,
'And be the glory thine.'

4 The Lord can clear the darkest skies,
Can give us day for night;
Make drops of sacred sorrow rise
To rivers of delight.

5 Let those that sow in sadness wait
Till the fair harvest come,

They shall confess their sheaves are great, And shout the blessings home.

*WATTS.

Heavenly Joy on Earth.

1 COME, ye that love the Lord,
And let your joys be known;
Join in a song with sweet accord,
And thus surround the throne.

2 The sorrows of the mind

Be banished from the place!
Religion never was designed
To make our pleasures less.

3 Yes, now, before we rise
To the immortal state,
The thoughts of that amazing bliss
Should constant joys create.

4 The men of grace have found
Glory begun below;

Celestial fruits on earthly ground
From faith and hope may grow.

5 The hill of Sion yields

A thousand sacred sweets,

Before we reach the heavenly fields,

Or walk the golden streets.

6 Then let our songs abound,

And every tear be dry;

We're marching through Immanuel's ground, To fairer worlds on high.

LIFE, DEATU, RESURRECTION, AND ETERNITY.

WATTS.

God eternal, and Man mortal. Ps. 90.

1 THROUGH every age, eternal God, Thou art our rest, our safe abode!

High was thy throne ere heaven was made,
Or earth thy humble footstool laid.

2 Long hadst thou reigned ere time began,
Or dust was fashioned into man;
And long thy kingdom shall endure,
When earth and time shall be no more.

3 But man, weak man, is born to die,
Made up of guilt and vanity:
Thy dreadful sentence, Lord, was just,
'Return, ye sinners, to your dust.'

4 A thousand of our years amount
Scarce to a day in thine account;
Like yesterday's departed light,
Or the last watch of ending night.
5 Death, like an overflowing steam,
Sweeps us away; our life's a dres ra,
An empty tale, a morning flower
Cut down and withered in an hour.
