Hymn 185. P. M.

I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord. Psalm cxxii. 1.

1

HOW overjoy'd was I,

When the solemn hour drew nigh,
Suramon'd to the house of prayer,
Flew my soul to worship there.
2 Come, my cheerful brethren said,
Let us go with holy speed:
Let us haste with one accord
To the temple of our Lord.
3 Running at bis high command,
There our ready feet shall stand,
Still within the sacred gate,
Will we for his mercy wait.

1

4 Pray, my friends, and never cease,
Wrestle on for Zion's peace:
Make her still your pious care,
On your hearts for ever bear.
5 O thou temple of my God,
For thy sake I spend my blood,
Longing here thy rise to see,
Glad to live and die for thee.

Hymn 186.

P. M.

He shall feed his flock like a shepherd.

Isa. xl. 11.

1 THE Saviour meets his flock to-day;
Tsale iu slott abide at home:

Shall I behind the people stay,
When Jesus kindly bids me come

I'll go; it is a place of prayer, In hope that God may meet me there. 2 How long did faithful Hannah wait,

And serv'd the Lord for many years, Attending at the temple gate,

With fasting and with many tears?
She seldom left the house of prayer,
Till God was pleas'd to meet her there.
3 Then, O! my Lord, give me the power;
And like the saints, I'll watch for thee;
In earnest wait the joyful hour,

When thou shalt be reveal'd in `me:
Now give the justifying grace,

And, sav'd from sin, show me thy face.
4 Remove temptation, O my Lord;
And let mine enemies be slain,
Which would withdraw me from thy word,
And plunge me in the world again :

And always ready may I stand,

To take my seat at thy right hand,

Hymn 187. L. M.

Return unto thy rest, O my squl. Psalm exvi. 7.

1

RETURN, my soul, enjoy thy rest,

Improve the day thy God hath blest,

Another six days' work is done,

Another Sabbath is begun.

2 Come, bless the Lord, whose love assigns.
So sweet a rest to wearied minds,
Provides a blest foretaste of heaven,
On this day, more than all the seven:

3 0 that our thoughts and thanks may rise, As grateful incense to the skies:

And draw from Christ that sweet repose, Which none but he that feels it knows. 4 This heavenly calm within the breast, Is the best pledge of glorious rest, Which for the church of God remains, The end of cares, the end of pains.

5 With joy, great God, thy works we scan,
Creation's scene, redemption's plan:
With praise we think on mercies past,
With hope we future pleasures taste.

6 In holy duties let the day,
In holy comforts pass away;
How sweet a Sabbath thus to spend,
In hope of one that ne'er shall end!

Hymn 188. L. M.

According to the multitude of thy tender mercies. Psalm li. 1.

1 SHOW pity, Lord, O Lord forgive,
Let a repenting rebel live;

Are not thy mercies large and free?
May not a sinner trust in thee?

2 My crimes are great, but don't surpass
The pow'r and glory of thy grace;
Great God, thy nature hath no bound,
So let thy pard'ning love be found.
30 wash my soul from every sin!
And make my guilty conscience clean!
Here on my heart the burden lies,
And past offences pain my eyes.
4 My lips with shame my sins confess,
Against thy law, against thy grace:
Lord, should thy judgments grow severe,
I am condemn'd, but thou art clear.

5 Should sudden vengeance seize my breath!
I must pronounce Thee just in death:
And if my soul were sent to hell,
Thy righteous law approves it well.

6 Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord,
Whose hope, still hov'ring round thy word,
Would light on some sweet promise there,
Some sure support against despair.

Hymn 189. L. M.

But if the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? Matt. v. 13.

1 Α"

H! Lord, with trembling I confess,
A gracious soul may fall from grace;
The salt may lose its seas'ning power,
And never, never find it more!

2 Lest that my fearful case should be,
Each moment knit my soul to thee:

And lead me to the mount above, Through the low vale of humble love. 3 Fountain of true felicity,

Eternal God, spring up in me;

And fill'd with life, and love, and pow'r,
My heart shall never wander more.

Hymn 190. P. M.

Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his pro-
mise fail for evermore? Psalm lxxvii. 8.
DEPTH of mercy! can there be
Mercy still reserv'd for me?

Can my God his wrath forbear?
Me, the chief of sinners, spare?
2 I have long withstood his grace:
Long provok'd him to his face;
Would not hearken to his calls;
Griev'd him by a thousand falls. no mode

3 Kindled his relentings are,
Me he now delights to spare;

Cries, "How shall I give thee up?"
Lets the lifted thunder drop.

4 There for me the Saviour stands:
Shows his wounds and spreads his hands
God is love! I know, I feel!

Jesus weeps and loves me still!

5 Jesus, answer from above; h
Is not all thy nature love?
Wilt thou not the wrong forget
Suffer me to kiss thy feet?.
