PREFACE.

THE Compiler of the ensuing pages not having met with any treatise of the practice on the Criminal fide of the Court of King's Bench, was induced in the early part of his practice*, to sketch out the following sheets for his own private ufe; and conceiving that they might be of fome use, to the junior part at least, of his branch of the profeffion, he has been fince induced to revife the fame, and now to offer them to the public, in the nature of an addenda, or as a companion, to the books on the practice of the court on the civil fide.

He has now (6th November 1802) been in the profeffion about twenty years, and admitted a folicitor, &c. more than twelve.

The compiler however is aware that his work is still very incomplete, but he is in hopes that the imperfections which may be found in it, will excite fome competent hand, to favor the profeffion with the general practice of the court in criminal matters, until the appearance of which, he prefumes this work will affift: at fome future period, the Compiler with the further affiftance of his many profesfional friends, (to whom he takes this opportunity of returning his fincere thanks, for their very free and kind communications to him on the fubject) expects he fhall be enabled to make the prefent compilation more perfect and comprehenfive.

*On the ground floor of No. 2, King's Bench Walks, Temple; it is open (except on holidays, which are most of the red letter days) both in term and vacation, from ten to two in the morning, and from five to eight in the afternoon.
