Consecration of Churches and Chapels.

"O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and
into his courts with praise."

W

From the c. Psalm.

ITH one consent let all the earth
To God their cheerful voices raise;
Glad homage pay with awful mirth,
And sing before him songs of praise.

2 Convinced that he is God alone,

From whom both we and all proceed;
We, whom he chooses for his own,
The flock that he vouchsafes to feed.

3 O enter then his temple gate,

Thence to his courts devoutly press;
And still your grateful hymns repeat,
And still his name with praises bless.

4 For he's the Lord, supremely good,
His mercy is for ever sure:

His truth, which always firmly stood,
To endless ages shall endure.

"I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord; and ·
so will I go to thine altar."

From the xxvi. Psalm.

"'LL wash my hands in innocence,
And round thine altar go;

I'

Pour the glad hymn of triumph thence,
And thence thy wonders show.

C.M.

2 My thanks I'll publish there, and tell
How thy renown excels;

That seat affords me most delight,

In which thine honour dwells.

"The Lord said unto him, I have hallowed this house
to put my name there for ever, and mine eyes and
mine heart shall be there perpetually."

[blocks in formation]

With his true saints alone

The courts of heaven are filled:
On his great love
Our hopes we place
Of present grace
And joys above.

2 O then with hymns of praise
These hallowed courts shall ring,

Our voices we will raise

The Three in One to sing;
And thus proclaim
In joyful song

Both loud and long
That glorious name.

3 Here, gracious God, do thou
For evermore draw nigh;
Accept each faithful vow,

And mark each suppliant sigh:
In copious shower

On all who pray

Each holy day
Thy blessings pour.

4 Here may we gain from heaven
The grace which we implore;
And may that grace, once given,
Be with us evermore,

Until that day

When all the blest

To endless rest
Are called away.

"Arise, O Lord, into thy resting-place."
From the cxxxii. Psalm.

WITH due reverence let us all
To God's abode repair;
And prostrate at his footstool fall
To breathe our humble

prayer.
2 Arise, O Lord, and now possess
Thy constant place of rest;
Be that not only with thy ark,

But with thy presence bless'd.

3 Clothe thou thy priests with righteousness,
Make thou thy saints rejoice;
And, for thy servant David's sake,
Hear thy anointed's voice.

"O pray for the peace of Jerusalem; they shall
prosper that love thee."

From the cxxii. Psalm.

'TWAS a joyful sound to hear
Our tribes devoutly say,

Up, Israel! to the temple haste,
And keep your festal-day.

2 At Salem's courts we must appear,
With our assembled powers,

In strong and beauteous order ranged,
Like her united towers.

30 ever pray for Salem's peace
For they shall prosp'rous be,
Thou holy city of our God,

Who bear true love to thee.

4 May peace within thy sacred walls
A constant guest be found;
With plenty and prosperity
Thy palaces be crown'd.

5 For my dear brethren's sake, and friends
No less than brethren dear,

I'll pray, May peace in Salem's towers
A constant guest appear.

6 But most of all I'll seek thy good,
And ever wish thee well,
For Sion and the temple's sake,
Where God vouchsafes to dwell.

"Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner-stone, elect,

precious."

HRIST is made the sure foundation,
Christ the head and corner-stone,
Chosen of the Lord, and precious,
Binding all the Church in one,
Holy Sion's help for ever,

And her confidence alone.

2 All that dedicated city,

Dearly loved of God on high,
In exultant jubilation

Pours perpetual melody;
God the One in Three adoring
In glad hymns eternally.

3 To this temple, where we call thee,
Come, O Lord of hosts, to-day :
With thy wonted loving-kindness,
Hear thy servants as they pray;
And thy fullest benediction
Shed within its walls alway.

4 Here vouchsafe to all thy servants
What they ask of thee to gain,
What they gain from thee for ever
With the blessèd to retain,
And hereafter in thy glory
Evermore with thee to reign.

5 Praise and honour to the Father,
Praise and honour to the Son,
Praise and honour to the Spirit,
Ever Three, and ever One,
One in might, and One in glory,
While eternal ages run.

Where Afric's sunny fountains
Roll down their golden sand;
From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.

Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile:
