The Appendix is a dissertation, not a lecture, on a different but kindred subject on which I had been requested to write. The Lectures and Appendix have been written piecemeal, amid the stress of varied and constant work, and this must be the apology for their style. The selection of subjects was partly made for me, as will be seen by reference to the footnote on p. 4.
