In the morning I climbed down from my bed. I walked about looking for food, but found none.

I began to fear I should die of hunger. Just then I came upon some corn. There were three long ears.

Part of the corn I ate at once and the rest I saved for my dinner. After that I climbed to the top of a hill. On all sides was the sea. I was on an island.

Down below was the ship, still resting on the sand. "I must get back to the ship," said I to myself.

The water was not deep. So I waded as far as I could. Then I swam to the side of the ship. A rope hung over the ship's side. I pulled my

There were many things on the ship. I found a chest of ship biscuits. I gave some to Barri, who was nearly starved.

Then I built a raft out of logs. I tied the logs with ropes, and nailed some boards upon them.

Upon the raft I put the chest of biscuits, some clothing, four guns, powder, shot and many other things.

The story of Robinson Crusoe is a long one. For twenty-six years he lived alone on this island. He made himself a tent out of a sail. Around this tent he built a high wall to keep out wild beasts.

Near the tent was a cave. In this cave Robinson kept many things which he got from the ship.

He raised wheat and rice. He had a herd of

inson made himself an umbrella from skins. It took him a long, long time. He made it so that it would shut up.

He made clothing for himself out of skins, too.

Robinson also made some jars and plates out of clay. Then he baked them in the fire. After that he cooked his food.

After a while he wished to go around the island. He made a boat by cutting down a big tree and digging out the wood. He took an old

sail from the ship for his boat.

When it was done, Robinson sailed half-way round the island. He came near being drowned. He was glad to get to shore.

One day when Robinson was out walking he saw a footprint in the sand. He feared some one would come and kill him. No one came.

About two years after that he saw some savages down on the shore. They were about to kill a black man.

The black man got away from them and ran to Robinson, who saved his life. After that they lived together. Robinson called his black man Friday, because he found him on Friday.

At last a ship from home landed at the island. Robinson Crusoe went back with the ship, taking Friday with him.
