HOU Lord of hosts, whose guiding Send us where'er thou wilt, O Lord,

THOU

hand

Has brought us here before thy face, Our spirits wait for thy command,

Our silent hearts implore thy peace.

Through rugged toil and wearying fight;

Thy conquering love shall be our sword, And faith in thee our truest might.

2.

Those spirits lay their noblest powers
As offerings on thy holy shrine ;
Thine was the strength that nourished ours,
The soldiers of the cross are thine.

4.

Send down thy constant aid, we pray;
Be thy pure angels with us still;
Thy truth, be that our firmest stay,
Our only rest to do thy will.

OCTAVIUS BROOKS FROTHINGHAM, 1822-1895

[blocks in formation]

THOU whose power o'er moving worlds presides,

Whose voice created, and whose wisdom guides,

On darkling man in pure effulgence shine,

And cheer the clouded mind with light divine.

A MEN.

2.

'Tis thine alone to calm the pious breast

With silent confidence and holy rest:

From thee, great God, we spring, to thee we tend,
Path, Motive, Guide, Original, and End.

BOETHIUS, circa 475-525.
Tr. SAMUEL JOHNSON, 1709-1784.
