I.

LEAD us, O Father, in the paths of peace;

Without thy guiding hand we go astray,
And doubts appall, and sorrows still increase;
Lead us through Christ, the true and living way.

2.

Lead us, O Father, in the paths of truth;

Unhelped by thee, in error's maze we grope, While passion stains and folly dims our youth, And age comes on uncheered by faith or hope.

3.

Lead us, O Father, in the paths of right;
Blindly we stumble when we walk alone,
Involved in shadows of a moral night;

Only with thee we journey safely on.

4.

Lead us, O Father, to thy heavenly rest,

However rough and steep the pathway be, Through joy or sorrow, as thou deemest best, Until our lives are perfected in thee.

WILLIAM HENRY BURLEIGH, 1812-1871.

HE Lord is my shepherd, no want shall I know:
I feed in green pastures, safe-folded I rest;
He leadeth my soul where the still waters flow,

Restores me when wandering, redeems when oppressed.

Through the valley and shadow of death though I stray,
Since thou art my guardian, no evil I fear:
Thy rod shall defend me, thy staff be my stay;

No harm can befall, with my comforter near.

3.

In the midst of affliction, my table is spread;
With blessings unmeasured my cup runneth o'er;
With perfume and oil thou anointest my head:
O, what shall I ask of thy providence more?

4.

Let goodness and mercy, my bountiful God,

Still follow my steps till I meet thee above. I seek, by the path which my forefathers trod

Through the land of their sojourn, thy kingdom of love.
